1297617 Non woven fabrics CHEVRON RESEARCH CO 24 July 1970 [25 July 1969] 36123/70 Heading D1R Non-woven sheet material comprises continuous synthetic polymer monofilaments having elongated cross-sections with an aspect ratio (ratio of cross-section length to width) of between 2.9:1 and 8:1 disposed randomly and substantially discrete from each other except at cross-over points. Preferably the monofilaments are of crystalline stereoregular polypropylene and have substantially rectangular cross-sections and cross-sectional areas in the range 0.00005 to 0.008 mm<SP>3</SP>. The non-woven sheets may be prepared by extruding the synthetic polymer through appropriately shaped orifices partially cooling the resulting monofilaments, drawing the filaments with a pneumatic jet and depositing them on a collecting surface, suitably a screen to which suction may be applied. The non-woven sheets thus produced may be heat sealed, calendered bonded or needle punched to fuse the fibres together. Bonding with an unspecified adhesive and stitching are also mentioned.
