1479882 Refining metals GROUPEMENT POUR LES ACTIVITES ATOMIQUES ET AVANCEES GAAA SA 10 May 1976 [27 May 19751 19080/76 Heading C7D Apparatus for treating molten metal with gas includes an electromagnetic pump having an inner tube of porous material surrounded by and sealed to an outer metal tube into which the treatment gas is supplied under pressure. The apparatus is immersible in molten metal and discharges to an intermediate electromagnetic pump from where it passes to a decanting and degassing tank. In a preferred embodiment the intermediate pump operates against the main treatment device to increase turbulence and provide improved mixing. As particularly described the treatment device 3 discharges to an electromagnetic pump 4, the output of which passes to a degassing vessel 5 wherein a pressure below atmospheric by not more than 100 torr is maintained by pump 6. The withdrawn gas is purified in unit 12 and recirculated. The unit 3 includes a porous tube 24 sealed to metal tube 15 by bellows 32. Within the porous tube is a magnetic core 28 encased in refractory, which surrounding the outer tube is a laminated stator 20. The pump 4 likewise includes a core 35 supported by a helical baffle 40.

(54) INSTALLATION FOR INDUSTRIAL TREATMENT OF MOLTED METAL This invention relates to the field of refining aluminum from non-metallic inclusions, sodium and gases. A known installation for treating molten metal with gas, containing a furnace, an electromagnetic treatment device with a porous channel, a sealed metal sheath, a metal pipe and an electromagnetic pump 1. The disadvantage of this installation is the weak efficiency of mixing the gases emanating from the treatment device with the molten metal due to its operation with backpressure. Inside the bulk of the rising molten metal, vortices of a very small radius occur. Since the cleaning is more effective than the molten metal is maintained in the form of turbulence, it is advisable to create conditions under which the duration of the vortex motion increases. The proposed installation is characterized in that the electromagnetic processing device is made submersible and installed in a furnace, and the electromagnetic pump is located above said device and is hermetically connected to it. The electromagnetic pump contains a magnetic core, covered with ceramics and fixed with a spiral-shaped metal part. Such a mutual arrangement of elements of the installation improves the quality of metal processing. FIG. 1 shows the proposed installation; in fig. 2 - processing device and electromagnetic pump. The installation comprises a furnace 1 with molten metal 2, in which an electromagnetic treatment device 3 connected with an electromagnetic pump 4 is immersed. The outlet opening of the pump 4 is connected to a pool 5 of settling and degassing, in which a vacuum is maintained by means of a vacuum pump 6. The vacuum pump 6 is connected by a pipeline 7 to a treatment device 3 comprising a ceramic base 8 on which the winding 9 of the electromagnetic device rests. The porous channel 10 is surrounded by a metal pipe 11 compacted with bellows 12 and 13. Inside porous channel 10 is placed core 14, covered with ceramics. With the outlet 15 of the processing device 3 is connected an inlet 16 of an electromagnetic pump 4 comprising an outer winding 17 and an inner magnetic core 18 coated with ceramic 19 fixed in a sealed metal casing 20 of the pump with a metal part 21 having a helical shape. The installation works as follows. Electromagnetic Absorption Molten Metal Pbpada ° ° 11T rShutb 10, through which the gas is supplied, and by the core 14. Under the influence of electromagnetic forces, the metal acquires a rotational-posture movement, moving upwards to the electromagnetic pump 4, in which the counter-pressure is generated. The presence of back pressure and a screw-shaped metal part 21 increases the residence time of the molten metal stream in the magnetic layer, which enhances the refining effect.
