1464447 Recovering zinc, copper and cadmium; jarosites OUTOKUMPU OY 11 Feb 1974 [12 Feb 1973] 6077/74 Heading C1A Zinc calcine is subjected to "neutral leaching" with a deficiency of sulphuric acid to dissolve substantially all non-ferrous metal oxides and leave ferrites; the solution is separated and Zn, Cu and Cd are recovered therefrom; the residue is treated at atmospheric pressure and 80-105‹ C. with sufficient H 2 SO 4 or Fe 2 (SO 4 ) 3 solution, in the presence of K<SP>+</SP>, Na<SP>+</SP> or NH 4 <SP>+</SP>, to convert the Zn, Cu or Cd ferrite to the metal sulphate and a jarosite of formula where A is K, Na or NH 4 and is a positive number not exceeding one, the jarosite precipitating; the solution is separated and recycled to the neutral leaching stage.

Note The initial ferrite-containing material after neutral leaching, having a composition, wt.%: Zn 20.8; Fe 38.0; NHj, 0.26; Si 0.47 :; Cd 0.19; Pb 3,5, in the amount of 1 kg of feed at the conversion stage, where 6.6 l of spent electrolyte was also injected. The temperature was maintained at about 95 C, and the concentration of sulfuric acid was 22-25 g / l. The process time was 24 hours, after which the solid and liquid media were separated.
The amount of the solid phase after washing and drying was 1100 g with the following composition, wt%: Zn 3.6; Fe 30.5 ;; NH (, 2,3; Cu 0.08; Cd 0.02; - Pb 3.2.
In a solution, the content of HjSOzj was 22 g / l, Fe — 5.4 g / l; NHf) - 5 g / l.
The amount of zinc converted into solution was 81%; the amount of iron that has passed into the sediment is 88.5%.
When containing zinc and iron in the cinder, respectively, 60.3 and 12.4%, the total recovery of zinc from the calcined product is 97.9%.

METHOD FOR REMOVING ZINC, COPPER AND CADMIUM FROM THE BURNED PRODUCT by neutral leaching, separating the ferrite-containing precipitate, treating the ferrite-containing precipitate with sulfuric acid at elevated temperature, introducing a complexing agent (sodium, potassium or ammopenium ions) and separating the jarosite precipitate, t and the fact that, in order to simplify the process, the amount of sulfuric acid is taken to be equivalent to the amount of ferrite and the complexing agent is introduced simultaneously with sulfuric acid.
