Observation wheel and wire pattern The invention concerns an observation wheel with passenger cabins placed around the rim, according to the beginning of conclusion 1. Modern observation wheels are based on the Ferris wheel that has been built for the world exhibition in Chicago in 1893. This wheel had a diameter of about 80 meter.
Since then, the concept of observation wheels has become a popular attraction, permanently installed or for temporary events.
The diameter of observation wheels is in the range between about 5 meter for small fairs and 250 meter for permanent land mark structures, like the famous London Eye, the Singapore Flyer and the Ain Dubai.
The principle of these Ferris wheels is based on a wheel with passenger cabins placed at the rim of the wheel, rotating around a central shaft, such that the passengers experience a wide view at large height over the environment.
The weight of the wheel and wind loads are supported at the central axis by means of a support frame structure at one side or at both sides of the wheel, further referred to as A-frames, and rotation is enabled by a shaft and bearing at the center of the wheel.
A disadvantage of this type of wheel support is that the A-frames reach as high as the center of the wheel, and as such are large, heavy and expensive.
Another disadvantage is that spokes are required to connect the central shaft to the rim of the wheel.
Both the shaft and spokes are also expensive parts of the structure.
Wind loads are to be resisted by the structure.
Another disadvantage of observation wheels according to prior art is that both the A-frames and the spokes contribute to the wind loads, requiring additional strengthening at extra costs.
Another disadvantage is that the A-frames and the spokes limit the free view of the passengers over the environment.
The objective of the present invention is to remove one or more of the above disadvantages to provide a useful alternative support system of an observation wheel.
This goal is achieved by replacing the A-frames and rotation shaft at the center of the wheel by an alternative support structure at the bottom of the wheel.
The rotation of the wheel is enabled by rollers mounted at the support structure supporting the rim of the wheel.
Because of the relatively small height of the wheel support structure, the height and weight of this alternative support structure is much lighter than the A-frames.
Also the spokes and central shaft are no longer required to connect the central support point to the rim of the wheel.
By replacing the A- frames by smaller structures at the bottom and eliminating the requirement of spokes, the wind loads are reduced and the weight of the total structure is further reduced.
Also the free view of the passengers is enhanced by the removal of the A-frames and spokes.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the roller supports at the bottom are mounted on a support frame, whereby at least one roller support includes a drive system to rotate the wheel.
In another embodiment of the invention the roller supports do not include a drive system, but the wheel rotation is driven by a separate system, e.g. by electrically driven friction wheels, which are pressed at one or more contact surfaces provided around the rim of the wheel.
This construction of the wheel without a central shaft and spokes can lead to an oval deformation shape as a result of the weight of the wheel, and deformation stresses in the rim are to be controlled within the allowable range by adding extra steel and providing sufficiently large bending moment of inertia to the cross section of the rim. In a special embodiment of the invention, the rim of the wheel is strengthened and stiffened by cross wires in the plane of the wheel, which are attached at two points of the rim. The wires effectively contribute to the stiffness and strength of the wheel, correcting the oval shape and reducing the stress range of the rim. The wires can be steel wires or rope of synthetic fiber. The wires can be attached according to different patterns which will determine the mechanical effectiveness and the wires will also have a visual effect.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention the wires are in a regular pattern where they do not cross through the wheel center, such that visually a hole is created in the center of the wheel.
Further explanation of the invention will be given by means of figures below, which will give a practical embodiment of the invention, but may not be considered in a limiting sense, wherein: Figure 1 shows a side view and front view of a general arrangement and the main parts of a large observation wheel according to prior art.
Figure 2 shows a side view and front view of an observation wheel according to the invention.
Figure 3 shows a cross section at the bottom of the wheel and support structure with rollers.
Figure 4 shows a side view and front view of an observation wheel according to the invention with wires crossing through the center of the wheel.
Figure 5 shows a side view and front view of an observation wheel according to the invention with a wire pattern where the wires are not crossing through the center of the wheel.
The observation wheel in figure 1 shows a side view and front view of a general arrangement of installed on a foundation (1), a rim (2), the main shaft (3) supporting the wheel, spokes (4), two so called A-frames (5) and passenger cabins (6). The spokes of the wheel are installed under pre-tension.
The observation wheel with passenger cabins according to the invention shown in Figure 2 is supported on rollers (8) mounted on a support structure (7) under the rim (2) of the wheel, The rollers (8) include electrical or hydraulic drive units to rotate the wheel.
The observation wheel with passenger cabins according to the invention shown in Figure 3 is supported on rollers (8) mounted on a support structure (7) under the rim (2) of the wheel.

The support rollers (8) according to the invention which are shown in Figure 3 support the weight of the wheel.
Additional rollers (9) are provided acting to the opposite side of the support rollers (8) in order to prevent the wheel from falling over sideways due to wind forces.
The observation wheel according to the invention shown in Figure 4 has wires crossing through the center of the wheel.
In this arrangement the wires are preferably connected to each other at the crossing point in the center in order to prevent wear resulting from rubbing at each other.
The observation wheel according to the invention shown in Figure 4 has wires in a pattern forming a hole in the center of the wheel.
The wires of the observation wheel according to the invention can also be fitted with a lighting system to enhance the visual effect.

1. An observation wheel with passenger cabins positioned around the rim, characterized in that the weight at the bottom is carried by rollers which allow the wheel to rotate about the wheel axis.

2. An observation wheel according to claim 1, in which rollers are placed on both sides which prevent the wheel from falling over under the influence of wind force, because they can exert an opposing moment on the wheel.

3. An observation wheel according to claim 1 or 2, wherein at least one of the rollers is equipped with a drive with which the wheel can be rotated.

An observation wheel according to claim 1 or 2, wherein driven rollers are pressed against the wheel and the wheel can be rotated by means of friction.

An observation wheel according to any of the preceding claims, wherein the wheel includes two or more wires attached to two points on the rim of the wheel.

An observation wheel according to one or more of the preceding claims, wherein the wires are attached on one side to the edge of the wheel and on the other side to one or more other wires.

An observation wheel according to claim 5 or 6, wherein the wires are arranged in a regular pattern.
