[0001] Compositions and procedure for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin, use of said compositions and fresh skin of preserved animal.
[0002]
[0003]
[0004]
[0005] The present invention relates to compositions for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin. It also refers to a process for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin, in which an amount of any of the compositions of the present invention is used.
[0006]
[0007] Additionally, the present invention is based on the use of these compositions as an agent for treating and / or preserving fresh animal skin. Finally, this invention also relates to fresh preserved animal skin, characterized in that it comprises at least one fresh animal skin having one of the compositions of the present invention.
[0008]
[0009] This invention is part of the fur treatment sector, where it is especially important to protect them against rot and degradation, adverse effects caused by uncontrolled growth of microorganisms.
[0010]
[0011] Background of the invention
[0012]
[0013] The skin of a live animal has flexibility, hardness and wear resistance. However, when it is slaughtered in the slaughterhouse and skin separation is carried out, it undergoes a relatively rapid degradation process, in which all these properties are affected progressively, for example, due to the rapid formation and multiplication of microorganisms such as fungi and bacteria.
[0014]
[0015] These microorganisms can come both from the animal's own skin, as well as from the conditions of the slaughterhouse, from its storage location after the skinning, or even from environmental exposure during the process. In addition, if the conservation of the skin is carried out in humid conditions, an adequate pH can be reached for the rapid growth of fungi, which could significantly damage the skin, and even feed on the nutrients present in the skin itself. fresh skin On the contrary, if fresh skin is preserved in a dry environment and rapid drying occurs, it will become hard and progressively brittle, also decreasing its quality.
[0016]
[0017] Therefore, if the skins are not processed immediately ( ie tanned), it is necessary to carry out a careful conservation for storage, or else, the quality of the final leather will be adversely affected.
[0018]
[0019] The usual procedure for the conservation of animal skins comprises a salty stage, by applying an abundant layer of coarse salt to cover the skin; Then, the skin is normally stacked in a cool, dry and well ventilated place, where the liquids produced during the gradual dehydration of the skin are slowly released as a result of this salting, finally obtaining an amount of dehydrated skin ready for storage .
[0020]
[0021] However, the traditional method involves the use of huge amounts of salt to prepare the layer that will cover the skin during the conservation stage, which implies an added cost, and also translates into the need to carry out additional washing steps later, before tanning, to remove these amounts of salt from the skin. On the other hand, the use of chemical agents to complete the cleansing and treatment of the skin, can affect negatively, and irreversibly, the chemical properties of said skin.
[0022]
[0023] In this context, alternative solutions have been developed over the years, aimed at reducing the amount of salt used, and simplifying the process, while ensuring protection against degradation.
[0024]
[0025] Thus, US614935A discloses a method of preserving skins and intestines in which an amount of halogenated acetic acid is sprayed, preferably monochloroacetic acid, in combination with an amount of salt less than half of the amount commonly used. However, it is known that spraying does not ensure total surface coverage, so that a certain amount of the skin's surface could be unprotected, and therefore, be more exposed to fungal and / or bacterial contamination.
[0026]
[0027] EP2016200B1, on the other hand, proposes the application of a composition comprising at least sodium lauryl sulfate and / or thyme oil as a minimum risk fungicidal agent, and an amount corresponding to 0.25-100 pounds is present. by every 3000 pounds of leather or wet skin. However, this technical solution does not reduce the amount of salt used in the salting stage.
[0028]
[0029] Therefore, it is considered that there is a need, in this sector of the technique, for new compositions and procedures that allow reducing the amount of salt used in said stage (s) of treatment and / or preservation of fresh skin of animal, while ensuring optimal protection of this skin against uncontrolled growth of microorganisms ( ie fungi and / or bacteria).
[0030]
[0031] Detailed description of the invention
[0032]
[0033] The present invention provides a composition for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin, which allows its stabilization in an initial phase, that is, when it is fresh, raw, freshly separated skin of a slaughtered animal. Thus, the composition of the present invention makes it possible to avoid excessive salt consumption during the skin treatment phases, and also makes it possible to preserve fresh skin for a period of approximately one year at a temperature between 5 ° C and 30 ° C.
[0034]
[0035] The terms "animal skin", "skin" or "leather", in the context of the present invention, are understood as that skin or outer layer of an animal removed, separated or skinned, particularly of an animal whose skin may be useful for its transformation into leather Examples of animals from which skin can be extracted, separated or skinned for the manufacture of leather include, but are not limited to, cattle, pigs, deer, kangaroos, goats, camels, sheep, horses, crocodiles , snakes, birds and fish.
[0036]
[0037] The term "skin" also refers to the skin removed, separated or skinned from an animal, at any stage of its processing once it has been removed from the carcass of the dead animal, including any intermediate stage of treatment and / or conservation of skin.
[0038]
[0039] The expression "fresh skin" refers to animal skin as just defined, with the restriction that it is a question of skin just arrived from the slaughterhouse, that is, that it has not been subjected to any washing process or chemical treatment .
[0040]
[0041] The term "approximately", as used in the present invention when it precedes a temperature value and refers to it, is intended to designate any value of temperature in a range corresponding to ± 10% of its numerical value, preferably a range corresponding to ± 5% of its numerical value, more preferably a range corresponding to ± 2% of its numerical value, and even more preferably a range corresponding to the ± 1% of its numerical value. For example, "about 100 ° C" should be interpreted as a range of 90 ° C to 110 ° C, preferably a range of 95 ° C to 105 ° C, more preferably a range of 98 ° C to 102 ° C, and still more preferably a range of 99 ° C to 101 ° C.
[0042]
[0043] Specifically, in a first aspect of the invention, there is provided a composition comprising an amount of sodium sulfate, an amount of at least one chelating agent, and an amount of at least two acids which in turn comprises a quantity of citric acid and an amount of at least one weak acid.
[0044]
[0045] It is postulated, in this sector of the art, that sodium sulfate contributes to the stabilization of the skin, by forming coordination complexes or covalent bonds with the free carboxylic functional groups of the skin's collagen structure, or with the amine and imide groups of the peptide bonds that make up the collagen. This stabilization of the reactive parts of the skin also contributes to minimizing its rot.
[0046]
[0047] The ingredients that make up the composition of the present invention act in a surprisingly synergistic manner, allowing it to act as a reversible semi-salient agent, unlike conventional preservation processes, in which the salt also only exerts a bactericidal function. This skin stabilization, unlike traditional irreversible tanning ( ie chrome or vegetable tanning), allows the properties of fresh skin to be maintained for a period of time similar to that of traditional preservation methods, using a much smaller amount of salt , and reducing the generation of chemical waste.
[0048]
[0049] In a preferred embodiment, the composition of the present invention comprises:
[0050]
[0051] a) an amount of sulfate anion between 50% and 70% by weight,
[0052] b) an amount of at least one chelating agent comprised between 0.5% and 2% by weight, and
[0053] c) an amount of at least two acids, comprising an amount of citric acid comprised between 2% and 8% by weight, and an amount of at least one weak acid comprised between 5% and 12% by weight.
[0054]
[0055] Said chelating agent is intended for the complexation of cations, preferably calcium (II) ( ie Ca2 +) or magnesium (II) ( ie Mg2 +), thus preventing the formation of precipitates that may adversely affect the conservation and properties of the skin. Numerous compounds are known in the state of the art that can perform this chelation function; In a preferred embodiment, said chelating agent is selected from the group consisting of aminopolycarboxylates, polyphosphonates, polyphosphates and any of their mixtures, it being understood that said chelating agents correspond to the deprotonated forms of their respective aminopolycarboxylic acids, polyphosphonic acids, polyphosphoric acids and any of their mixtures.
[0056]
[0057] "Aminopolycarboxylate" means any chemical compound that contains one or more nitrogen atoms connected to a plurality of carboxylate functional groups through one or more carbon atoms. Since the carboxylate groups are in an anionic form, ie each of them has lost the corresponding acid proton of the carboxylic acid functional group, they can act effectively in complexing cations, particularly metal cations, and more particularly, cations of alkali and alkaline earth metals.
[0058]
[0059] Preferably, but not limited to, said amount of at least one chelating agent is at least one aminopolycarboxylate derived from an aminopolycarboxylic acid selected from the group consisting of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), ethylene glycolbis (2-aminoethyl ether) -N, N , N ', N'-tetraacetic acid (EGTA), diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA), 1,2-bis (2-aminophenoxy) ethane-N, N, N', N'-tetraacetic acid (BAPTA) acid, 1,4 , 7,10-tetraaza-1,4,7,10-cyclododecanotetraacetic acid (DOTA) and any of its mixtures. It will be apparent to the person skilled in the art that other aminopolycarboxylates with different chelation properties can be used, which contain a different number of carbon atoms between the nitrogen atom and the carboxyl group, and which may optionally also contain one or more substituents.
[0060]
[0061] By "polyphosphate" is meant any salt or ester of a polymeric oxoanion formed by phosphate units, linked together by means of oxygen atoms and / or carbon atoms. Said chemical compounds may have a more or less linear or cyclic structure. complex with different chelation properties, and may contain a different number of carbon atoms between optionally substituted phosphate units. It will be apparent to the person skilled in the art that said polyphosphonates correspond to the deprotonated forms of their respective phosphonic acids.
[0062]
[0063] Preferably, but not limited to, said amount of at least one chelating agent is at least one polyphosphonate derived from a polyphosphonic acid selected from the group consisting of aminotris (methylene phosphonic) acid (ATMP), ethylenediamine tetra (methylene phosphonic) acid (EDTMP ), hexamethylenediaminetetra (methylene phosphonic) acid (HDTMP), tetramethylenediaminetetra (methylene phosphonic acid) (TDTMP) and any mixture thereof. Alternatively, other aminopolycarboxylates with different chelation properties, containing a different number of carbon atoms between the nitrogen atom and the optionally substituted carboxyl group, can be used.
[0064]
[0065] In another preferred embodiment, said chelating agent is selected from polyphosphates; more preferably, said chelating agent is a hexametaphosphate salt, and even more preferably, it is sodium hexametaphosphate.
[0066]
[0067] The weak acids present in the composition of the present invention play an essential role in minimizing the increase in skin pH ( ie buffering or acid buffering), since such increase could cause alkaline hydrolysis which in turn could result in a loss of collagen, thus negatively affecting the properties of the skin, such as its flexibility.
[0068]
[0069] In a preferred embodiment, said amount of at least one weak acid comprises at least one dicarboxylic acid. More preferably said at least one dicarboxylic acid contains between 2 and 6 carbon atoms. Examples of these dicarboxylic acids containing between 2 and 6 carbon atoms include, but are not limited to oxalic acid ( ie, etandioic acid), malonic acid ( ie propandioic acid), succinic acid ( ie butandioic acid), glutaric acid ( ie acid pentandioic acid) or adipic acid ( ie hexandioic acid).
[0070]
[0071] On the other hand, citric acid exerts a double function of pH buffering agent and antioxidant agent, contributing to a better preservation of the skin.
[0072]
[0073] In a particular embodiment of this first aspect of the invention, said composition for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin further comprises a amount of salt comprised between 5% and 10% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition. More particularly, this salt is fine salt. "Fine salt" means that salt that has undergone a refining process.
[0074]
[0075] In another embodiment, said composition additionally comprises an amount of at least one anti-caking agent comprised between 1% and 3% by weight with respect to the total weight of the composition. Preferably, said at least one anti-caking agent is a silicon compound, which advantageously captures moisture and prevents agglomeration. More preferably, said at least one anti-caking agent is silicon oxide (SiO2).
[0076]
[0077] In particular, said composition may additionally comprise an amount of sodium formate comprised between 3% and 10% by weight. Said sodium formate contributes to the increase in pH during the neutralization process, helping to achieve a more effective penetration of the composition of the invention.
[0078]
[0079] Optionally, said composition may also comprise an amount of talc comprised between 2% and 5% by weight. Talc plays a complementary role to that of the anti-caking agent, and given its usually small particle size, it helps to improve the homogenization and fluidity of the composition, thus facilitating its mixing and dispersion on the skin when applied to it.
[0080]
[0081] In a particularly preferred embodiment of this first aspect of the invention, the composition comprises 50% -70% by weight of sulfate anion, 3% -10% by weight of sodium formate, 1% -3% by weight of at least one agent anti-caking agent, 5% -10% by weight of fine salt, 2% -5% by weight of talc, 0.5% -2% by weight of sodium hexametaphosphate, 5% -12% by weight of at least one dicarboxylic acid and 2% -8% by weight of citric acid. Said sulfate anion may be derived from any ionic compound such as sodium sulfate, potassium sulfate or barium sulfate, or from any mixture of ionic compounds.
[0082]
[0083] In a second aspect of the invention, a method is provided for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin.
[0084]
[0085] Specifically, a procedure is provided for the treatment and / or preservation of fresh animal skin, characterized in that it comprises:
[0086] a) subject an amount of fresh animal skin to at least one wash with an amount of water comprised between 140-160% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin,
[0087] b) adding an amount of at least one bactericidal agent in the aqueous suspension resulting from step a),
[0088] c) adding a first amount of the composition of the present invention in said aqueous suspension,
[0089] d) adding an amount of at least one fungicidal agent in said aqueous suspension, e) adding a second quantity of the composition of the present invention in said aqueous suspension,
[0090] f) adding an amount of salt in said aqueous suspension,
[0091] g) adding an amount of formic acid in said aqueous suspension, and
[0092] wherein a filming of said amount of fresh animal skin is carried out after at least any one of the stages for a certain period of time.
[0093]
[0094] In a preferred embodiment, after each of the stages b) -g), a filming of said amount of fresh animal skin is carried out for a certain period of time.
[0095]
[0096] "Filming" is understood, in the context of the present invention, the rotational turning movement of the skin within an apparatus or equipment intended for that purpose. Preferably, said filming is carried out in a tanning drum, molinette, or any agitation system available in the state of the art, where the skin is subjected to rotation, with a parabolic movement that causes the leather to rise and fall, thus exerting a uniform mechanical effect on the entire mass, which consequently facilitates the diffusion of any chemical applied on the surface of these.
[0097]
[0098] With respect to step a), said washing with water preferably further comprises the addition of an amount of surfactant and an amount of sodium bicarbonate in the aqueous suspension.
[0099]
[0100] More preferably, said step a) of the process of the invention comprises:
[0101]
[0102] i. Perform a first wash of said amount of fresh animal skin with an amount of water at a temperature between about 23 ° C and about 25 ° C and an amount of surface active agent,
[0103] ii. Perform a second wash with an amount of water at a temperature between about 23 ° C and 25 ° C, an amount of surfactant and an amount of sodium bicarbonate, and
[0104] iii. Perform a third wash with an amount of water at a temperature between approximately 12 ° C and 20 ° C,
[0105]
[0106] The amount of water used in each of the three stages i), ii) and iii) is preferably between 140% and 160% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0107]
[0108] The amount of surfactant used in each of the stages i) and ii) is comprised between 0.1% and 0.3% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0109]
[0110] The amount of sodium bicarbonate used in step ii) is between 0.3% and 0.6% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0111] With respect to step b), said amount of at least one bactericidal agent is preferably between 0.1% and 0.5% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin, more preferably between 0.1% and 0.3% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin, and even more preferably, said amount of at least one bactericidal agent is 0.2% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0112]
[0113] Said at least one bactericidal agent can be selected from the group consisting of salts of dithiocarbamates, dithiocarbamate-metal complexes, orpho-phenylphenol ( ie OPP), orpho-phenylphenate salts, isothiazolones and any of their mixtures. Preferably, said at least one bactericidal agent is a dithiocarbamate salt. Examples of isothiazolones include, but are not limited to, 1,2-benzoisothiazolin-3-one ( ie BIT), 5-chloro-2-methyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one ( ie CMIT), 2-methyl-4- isothiazolin-3-one ( ie MIT), 4,5-dichloro-2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one ( ie DCOIT) and 2-n-octyl-4-isothiazolin-3-one ( ie ILO ). In a particular embodiment, moreover, said at least one bactericidal agent is preferably applied in dissolved or solubilized form in a solvent.
[0114]
[0115] In a preferred embodiment, step b) of the present process preferably comprises the initial addition of an amount of water at a temperature between 12 ° C and 20 ° C, said amount of water being in the range between 25% and 35% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0116]
[0117] With respect to steps c) and e) of the process of the invention, said addition of the first and second amount of the composition of the invention may be carried out by means of a variety of methods including, but not limited to: spraying , immersion, roller coating, soaking. The composition of the present invention can be applied in the form of a concentrated solution, although its application in powder form will be especially advantageous, to make its addition directly on the aqueous medium. Preferably, said first amount of the composition of the invention, as applied in step c), is in the range between 2.5% and 3.5% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh skin of animal. More preferably, said first amount is 3% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0118]
[0119] Said second amount of the composition of the invention, as applied in step e), is preferably in the range between 4.5% and 6.0% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin . More preferably, said second amount is 5% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0120]
[0121] The application of the two-stage composition is especially advantageous since it avoids a sharp increase in the Baumé degrees (° Bé) of the solution that could affect the stability of the fungicide, causing its precipitation. The Baumé scale correlates with the concentration expressed as a percentage of solute, and usually, two Baumé density scales are considered (OA Hougen, KM Watson, RA Ragatz "Principles of chemical processes", Ed. Reverté SA 1982, volume I, p. 49), one for liquids lighter than water (p <1 g / cm3), which is defined by the following expression:
[0122]
[0123] Baumé degrees (° Bé) = (140 / G) - 130
[0124]
[0125] where G is the specific weight at 60 ° F, and another for liquids heavier than water (p> 1 g / cm3), which is defined by the expression:
[0126]
[0127] Baumé degrees (° Bé) = 145 - (145 / G)
[0128]
[0129] On the other hand, in an alternative embodiment, the procedure described above can be carried out, with the difference that said first and second quantity of the Composition of the invention through a single addition, in step e) of the process, instead of a sequential addition in steps c) and e), separated by step d) of adding the fungicidal agent. However, the application of the two-stage composition is especially advantageous, since it allows avoiding the excessive increase in salt concentration in the preservation medium, which could cause the precipitation of the biocides or the breakdown of the emulsion of the biocides. .
[0130]
[0131] With respect to step d), said amount of at least one fungicidal agent is preferably between 0.10% and 0.20% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin; more preferably, said amount of at least one fungicidal agent is 0.15% by weight relative to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0132]
[0133] Said fungicidal agent is preferably a chemical compound of the benzothiazoles family. More preferably, said fungicidal agent is selected from the group consisting of 2- (thiocyanomethylthio) benzothiazole (TCMTB), W-octylisothiazolone ( ie NOIT), ortho- phenylphenol ( ie OPP) or any of its salts.
[0134]
[0135] Said at least one fungicidal agent can be applied on the surface of the animal's fresh skin by means of a variety of methods that include, but are not limited to: immersion, roller coating, soaking, although its application in form will be especially advantageous. of emulsion on the aqueous suspension. This mode of application allows, for example, to have a pre-emulsified medium that can be emulsified in aqueous medium when it is to be used. The addition of said at least one emulsion fungicidal agent on the aqueous suspension ensures optimum skin surface coverage, thus reducing the risk of unprotected portions with antifungal agent, and therefore exposed to the growth of This type of microorganisms.
[0136]
[0137] With respect to step f) of the present process of the invention, said amount of salt that is added in the aqueous suspension is preferably in the range between 2% and 5% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin , more preferably 3% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0138]
[0139] In an alternative embodiment, the process of the present invention is identical to the one described above, with the difference that in step b) an amount of at least one bactericidal agent in the aqueous suspension, while in step d) an amount of at least one fungicidal agent is added in the aqueous suspension.
[0140]
[0141] With respect to step g) of the process described above, said amount of formic acid is preferably in the range between 0.2% and 0.6% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin; preferably, said amount of formic acid is 0.4% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0142]
[0143] In another preferred embodiment, the treated animal skin resulting from step g) is kept at rest for a period of time between 8 hours and 12 hours, where each time a rest period of time between 45 minutes and 50 minutes, filming takes place with a duration between 4 min and 10 minutes.
[0144]
[0145] A third aspect of the invention relates to the use of the composition of the present invention as a treatment and / or preservation agent for fresh animal skin.
[0146]
[0147] In a fourth aspect of the invention, a fresh canned animal skin is provided, comprising at least one fresh animal skin having the composition of the present invention homogeneously distributed throughout its thickness, and wherein said composition is in an amount between 6% and 10% by weight with respect to the total weight of the amount of fresh animal skin.
[0148]
[0149] Throughout the description and the claims, the word "comprises" and the variations of the word are not intended to exclude other technical characteristics, additives, components or stages. The objects, advantages and additional features of the invention will be apparent to the experts. in the art after analysis of the description, or can be learned from the examples of the invention The following examples and drawings are provided by way of illustration and are not intended to be limiting of the present invention.
[0150]
[0151] Additionally, the invention covers all possible combinations of the particular and preferred embodiments of the present document.
