DESCRIPTION

GAS ABSORPTION ENVELOPE FOR PACKAGING OF LOSS PRODUCTS
 5
Technical sector

The present invention is related to the packaging of plant products, such as fruits, vegetables or flowers, and other perishable products, proposing an absorption envelope intended to be placed in the boxes or packaging bags of said products, in order to eliminate ethylene and other harmful gases (ethanol, acetaldehyde, etc.) that are produced by plant products and other perishable products, as well as spores and microorganisms present in the atmosphere of their packaging and that induce maturation and deterioration of packaged products.
 fifteen
State of the art

The packaging of perishable products, such as fruits, vegetables, flowers, etc., is common in bags or boxes of different types, where due to the characteristics of these products, an atmosphere with different gases (ethylene, hydrogen sulfide, etc.) is produced. , spores, microorganisms, moisture and other gases that induce maturation and deterioration of packaged products, reducing their shelf life.

To avoid the problem of acceleration of deterioration and maturation by that harmful atmosphere that is created in the packaging of said products, it is known to use 25 filters to absorb harmful gases, which are arranged inside the spaces chilled confined in which products are transported; and it is also known to use absorption envelopes of said harmful gases, which are arranged in the bags or packaging boxes of those products.
 30
The gas absorption envelopes that are currently used for said function are generally composed of a support means that forms a receptacle in which a filter material is housed.

The filter material used in this application is usually a granulate consisting of 35 clays (zeolite, sepiolite, alumina, diatom stones, etc.) impregnated with permanganate
of potassium, sodium permanganate, lithium permanganate or other permanganates, or mixtures of said clays with impregnation of a permanganate.

The support medium that houses said filter material has usually been an unstructured fiber material of high density polyethylene, which has a series of theoretical advantages, such as high resistance, gas permeability and impermeability to water molecules.

However, in its practical use, it can be seen that the envelopes made with this type of support medium allow water molecules to pass inside it, and present the problem that the filtering material is composed of a granulate of clays impregnated with a permanganate, in the contact of the permanganate with the drops of water the permanganate dissolves in the water and, since the permanganate is of a purple color, it transfers this color to the drops of water, so that these are stained taking that color . fifteen

Under these conditions, since in the containers (boxes and bags) of fruits, vegetables, flowers and other perishable products, strong condensations are occasionally generated, the water resulting from the condensation may come into contact with the filtering material of the envelopes used to the absorption of the harmful gases, the permanganate being dissolved in said condensation water, which, upon contact with the packaged products, leaves a purple color in them; This being one of the most important problems in the packaging of the aforementioned products, since the products that are affected must be eliminated.
 25
Additionally, when the filtering material comes into contact with water, there is also a reduction in the filtering capacity of said material.

For all these circumstances, it is evident that the formation of absorbent envelopes with a support medium that is completely impermeable to water and that maintains a high gas permeability, is essential to minimize the problem of staining of packaged perishable products, without reduce the effectiveness of the absorption of harmful gases.
Object of the invention

According to the invention, an envelope is proposed for the preservation of perishable products, and especially for the absorption of gases that accelerate the maturation of vegetable products such as fruits, vegetables or flowers, for application in boxes and 5 bags of packaging of said products.

This envelope object of the invention comprises a support means, formed by a gas permeable and water impermeable laminar body, said support means forming a receptacle in which a filter granulate is housed. 10

The laminar body of the support medium is composed of a plastic sheet with a high gas permeability, to which a resistant sheet is attached that provides solidity, constituting a set that has a good gas permeability, but that totally prevents the passage of the water. Fundamentally, the resistant sheet is made of cellulose, but it can also be made of other materials, such as nonwoven fabric.

The plastic sheet means that the sealing, whether by heat, by impulse, by frequency, by ultrasound or by other means, does not have imperfections that can cause water to penetrate through the support medium over time; while the resistant sheet 20 provides the envelope with stiffness and resistance preventing it from breaking in contact with a cutting edge of the products housed in the application package, whereby the plastic sheet can also have a small thickness to facilitate passage of the gases.
 25
On the other hand, it has been proven that the assembly of the resistant sheet and the plastic sheet has different properties than the sum of the properties of each of the sheets, since it has a gas permeability significantly greater than the sum of the permeabilities of both sheets, with the same thickness thereof; increasing the gas permeability if the face exposed to the gas is constituted by the 30 resistant sheet.

Description of the figures

Figure 1 schematically shows a gas absorption envelope according to the invention, with one end of the envelope open, observing the filtering granulate housed in the
inside, and with a partial cut-out of the support means, the two component sheets thereof being appreciated.

Detailed description of the invention
 5
The object of the invention relates to a gas absorption envelope, intended to be placed in the packaging boxes or bags of perishable products, in particular vegetables such as fruits, vegetables or flowers, in order to eliminate ethylene and other gases harmful that accelerate the deterioration and maturation of these products.
 10
The recommended envelope is composed of a support means (1) that forms a receptacle, within which a filter granulate (2) formed by a porous substrate provided with an impregnation is housed.

The porous substrate that is used in the formation of the filter granulate (2) can be made of 15 different materials from the following:

- Diatomaceous earths.
- Natural or synthetic zeolites.
- Molecular sieve. twenty
- Celita.
- Perlita.
- Active aluminas and aluminas.
- Mica.
- Magnesium aluminate. 25
- Aluminosilicate.
- Magnesium silicate.
- Activated carbon.
- Absorbent clays, such as bentonite, sepiolite attapulgite, vermiculite, etc.
- Kaolin. 30
- Bauxite activated.
- Silica Gel.
- Or mixtures of said materials.

The impregnation of said filter granulate (2) may vary in percentage, said impregnation of the following types being possible:
- Potassium permanganate.
- Sodium permanganate.
- Lithium permanganate.
- Magnesium permanganate.
- Barium permanganate 5
- Or any purple permanganate.

The filter granulate (2) that forms the porous substrate may also have other formulations, such as:
 10
- A mixture of substrates with impregnation and substrates without impregnation, among the substrate materials indicated above.

- Addition of chemical compounds as impregnators, for example bicarbonate, provided that it has an added permanganate. fifteen

- Mixture of substrates impregnated with permanganate (and additionally other chemical compounds), with substrates endowed with other impregnations, such as KOH, NaOH, etc.
 twenty
- Combinations of these possibilities, being able to mix three or more kinds of granules.

The support means (1) is composed, in turn, of a plastic sheet (3) and a resistant sheet (4); the plastic sheet (3) being a compound or mixture of compounds such as ultra low, low or medium density polyethylene, EVA (Ethylene Vinyl Acetate), isotactic polypropylene (iPP), or any other plastic material that is impervious to guide and gas permeable and allow a seal without imperfections, whether by heat, by impulse, by frequency, by ultrasound or by other means, which does not allow the passage of water through said seal; while the resistant sheet (4) can be of any gas permeable compound 30, for which it is fundamentally provided that this resistant sheet (4) is made of cellulose, but it can be made of other materials that meet the mentioned specifications , such as nonwoven fabric.

So, for the practical function to which the recommended envelope is intended, as a means of absorption of ethylene and other gases that induce and accelerate deterioration and
maturation of perishable products, especially vegetables, such as fruits, vegetables or flowers, in order to remove these gases from the atmosphere of the containers in which these products are housed, the envelope must comprise at least the granulate filter (2) and the support medium (1) composed of a plastic sheet (3) and a resistant sheet (4).
