A multi-purpose baby blanket
Technical field
The present invention relates to a baby blanket which can be transformed into different states and therefore be used for multiple purposes. The blanket may for example be transformed into and used as a baby nest, a pouch, or a bag.
Background
Accessories for infants or small children with multiple purposes are getting more and more popular amongst parents, since taking your child outside ofthe home often involves a large amount of planning and packing. Parents may for short trips or visits settle with a minimum amount of packing such as a bag with extra diapers and clothes, but even for short visits it may be stressful for the parents to feed, put their baby to bed or just to comfort the baby without their favourite/usual accessories such as toys, teddy bear, pacifiers, baby nest, blankets etc.
Babies are normally awake for short periods in which they feed, thereafter they need regular naps. Babies often sleep best tucked in a blanket or in a narrow area where they feel comfortable and safe. At home babies are tucked in their baby bed/Moses basket, pram etc. but when they are outside ofthe home, a baby bed may not be available. In such cases, the baby may be laid in a regular bed or sofa and surrounded by pillows or blankets in order for the baby not to roll out of the bed. The baby might however, in their sleep, pull the pillows or blankets over their body or even their head which may result in breathing problems or they may become overheated. Alternatively, the baby can sleep in the arms of their parents, but this prevents the parents from doing other things.
An increasingly popular product is therefore a baby nest which is an easy transportable product. It is essentially a mattress with padded sides that offer a narrow and cosy sleeping area. The side pats also offer protection for larger babies since the pads assure that babies do not roll out of the
DK 2018 00140 A1 nest.
Even though a baby nest is portable it may require an extra bag in order to transport it around. If additional equipment such as a playing blanket, sleeping quilt, nursing pillow, toys, and a bag of necessities are packed, the parents are limited to use a car in order to transport everything.
Several products have tried to alleviate this problem by making multipurpose products which have several uses. An example is DK201770282, which is a baby nest with removable pads such that the mattress can be used in a pram or the pads can be utilized alone as a crib bumper. It further discloses straps for carrying the nest, however these straps may constitute a safety risk since the baby may become entangled into the straps.
Several similar products exist. However, there is still a need to further develop a superior product with can be used for multiple purposes and which can be used for babies as they grow, since babies otherwise outgrow the products fast.
Summary of Invention
In a first aspect of the invention the above mentioned problems have at least been partially mitigated by a multi-purpose baby blanket having a first side and a second side, said blanket comprising multiple sets of mutually corresponding fastening means, each set of mutually corresponding fastening means comprising a first fastening member and a second fastening member arranged on a line which is substantially perpendicular with a center axis of the blanket and on the same side of said center axis, such that each set of mutually corresponding fastening means are engageable by rolling the blanket from a point on the edge of the blanket, which is on the line of that set of mutually corresponding fastening means, along said line of that set of mutually corresponding fastening means to provide a rolled portion, wherein when all sets of mutually corresponding fastening means are engaged, the rolled portion of the blanket will form a circumferential wall thereby defining a baby nest.
The described baby blanket provides the advantage that it can be used
DK 2018 00140 A1 as a large blanket, e.g. for when the baby is awake and can be converted into a baby nest when the baby needs to sleep.
The term baby nest is a term used to describe a substantially flat and soft area suitable for accommodating a baby or small child. The area is surrounded by a soft circumferential wall which is a safety measure.
Synonyms for the circumferential wall may be pad or bumber or other words describing a soft elongated wall surrounding the nest.
The term baby blanket is used as a non-limiting term to describe a blanket. They blanket should have a thickness so that it is comfortable for a baby to lay or sit on.
A center axis is to be understood as a line lying in the plane of the blanket and running from a point on edge of the blanket to another point on the opposite edge of the blanket through the center point of the blanket. It should be noted that the center axis is an arbitrary axis and is not visible on the blanket. If the blanket has an elliptical shape such as e.g. a circle, the center axis corresponds to a diameter. Similarly, if the blanket has the shape of a square the center axis may be a diagonal, or a center line, i.e. a line from the center of one side to the center of the opposite side. When the blanket has a particular shape, such as a quadrant or a circle, a center axis may also be a symmetry axis. The blanket may, depending on its shape, have a finite (or infinite) number of center axis’, thus when referring to a center axis, it may be any one of them.
The shape of the blanket is not limited to any particular shape and may for example be an elliptical shaper such as a circle, or a polygonal such as a square. The blanket may have a length and width similar to each other, or the blanket may be elongated.
The term rolling is to be understood as a movement where a portion of the edge is enclosed or enrolled in a nearby portion of the blanket to form a wall such as a roll or coil. Similarly, the edge of the blanket may also be folded several times to obtain a similar wall or the edge of the blanket may be shaped in any particular way in order to obtain a wall.
DK 2018 00140 A1
It may additionally or alternative be said that the blanket is characterized in that it comprises an outer fabric equipped with lining. The lining may be a quilt, such as a wadded quilt or the like. The blanket may have a filling of for example natural fill, feather, silk, cotton, wool or fiber filling such as wool or polyester fibers.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that at least one of the sets of mutually corresponding fastening means is arranged on a center axis of the blanket. Fastening means placed on a center axis of the blanket allows the rolled circumferential wall to be locked in place by a single central fastening means. E.g. if the blanket has a circular shape, the central axis corresponds to a diameter ofthe blanket.
A single central fastening means is to be understood as placed centrally on the circumferential wall with regards to the length of the circumferential wall. When a set of mutually corresponding fastening means are arranged as described, a circumferential wall should be folded such that the fastening means are located in the middle of the longitudinal direction ofthe wall. The fastening of the circumferential wall will therefore be centrally located and provide good stability.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the baby blanket at least comprises at least three sets of mutually corresponding fastening means.
Depending on the number of sets of fastening means the nest may obtain different shapes. If the blanket comprises three sets of mutually corresponding fastening means the baby nest may obtain a triangular shape. Similar four sets of mutually corresponding fastening means may result in a square shaped nest, since four sides may be shaped into circumferential walls and fastened in placed. It is preferred to shape the blanket into a baby nest having at least one fastening means per circumferential wall of the nest. However, a nest can be folded with four circumferential walls and locked into place by only two fastening means if the baby nest is folded by firstly rolling two opposite sites into walls without fastening the fastening means and subsequently rolling and fastening the neighbouring sides. This configuration is
DK 2018 00140 A1 faster to fold and is suitable if the baby nest is used e.g. as a nursing pillow, but provide less stability.
It is important that the shape of the nest can accommodate a baby, but it may be any shape which is suitable for this. If the number of sets of fastening means is increased further than four, the nest may form a polygonal shape with sides equal to the number of sets of fastening means.
It may additionally or alternative be said that the blanket is characterized in that the baby blanket comprises six sets of mutually corresponding fastening means.
With six sets of fastening means, it is preferred that two of the sets are placed on a first center axis but on different sides of a second central line, said second central axis being perpendicular to the first center axis, i.e. the two sets are located on different halves of the blanket. Two other sets of fastening means are located on one side of the first center axis whereas the remaining two sets of fastening means are located on the other side of the first center axis. The two sets on one side of the first center axis are located on each side of the second central axis and on lines which are parallel to the second central axis. Preferably the two lines have a similar offset from the second central axis. The two sets on the other side of the first center axis are located similarly, preferably they are placed on the same lines as the two sets on one side of the first center axis.
This provides a blanket which has two sets of fastening means for the walls in one direction and a single set of fastening means for walls directed in another direction. In such an embodiment the walls with two sets of fastening means may have a length which is longer than the walls with one set of fastening means. This ensures that the longer walls are securely fastened into place and provide the same stability as the shorter walls with a single set of fastening means. When a baby is placed in the nest, the longer walls are intended to be next to the baby, whereas the walls fastened by a single fastening means is intended as walls above the baby’s head and below its feet.
The two fastening means on each of the sides next to the baby assures
DK 2018 00140 A1 that the walls are kept in place if the baby tries to roll out of the nest.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the first fastening members are located 10 to 40 cm from the centre of the blanket. When the first fastening members are located as described and they are engaged with the corresponding second fastening members on the rolled circumferential wall. The rolled circumferential wall will define an area with a size suitable for accommodating a laying baby. In a presently preferred embodiment, the baby nest area defined by the circumferential wall, when all sets of mutually corresponding fastening means are engaged, is substantially 30 cm in width and 65 cm in height. Such dimensions would provide the best suited nest area for babies in the age of up to four to six months, depending on growth. In another embodiment, the baby nest area defined by the circumferential wall, when all sets of mutually corresponding fastening means are engaged, is substantially 60 cm in width and 65 cm in height. Such dimensions would allow a set of babies to be accommodated in the nest simultaneously, making the baby nest well suited for parents of twins.
When the sides of the blanket are rolled to form a circumferential wall, the wall is locked into place by engaging the first and second fastening members. The portion of the blanket located between the first fastening members and the edge will form the circumferential wall whereas the portion of the blanket between said fastening members and the center of the blanket defines a dimension of the lying area of the nest.
It may additionally or alternative be said that the blanket is characterized in that the first fastening members of at least two sets of fastening means are located closer to the center than the first fastening members of at least two other sets of fastening means. Preferably the two sets of fastening members located closer to the center are located at the same distance from the center. This provides a baby nest with a lying area having different length and width.
The terms length and width are terms used to describe dimensions of
DK 2018 00140 A1 the blanket which are essentially perpendicular to each other. If the two dimensions differ in length, the longest of the two is considered the length.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the sets of mutually corresponding fastening means comprise additional fastening members located on the line between the first and second fastening member. The additional fastening members provides the effect that the size of the laying area may be adjusted. The width of the nest may therefore be adjusted while keeping a desired length and vice versa. For bigger babies the lying area may be increased so it fits both to their length and width. The baby nest according to the invention can therefore be used for a longer time compared to regular baby nests. As the lying area of the nest is increased the thickness of the circumferential walls decrease. The possible reduction or increment in thickness of the circumferential walls is a great advantage when the nest is used to help train the baby’s neck since the thickness of the circumferential wall, i.e. the height, can be adjusted to fit the baby. This is done by placing the baby with its chest on the circumferential wall so their upper body is elevated. This makes it necessary for the baby to use its neck to raise their head and look forward. The additional fastening members may of the same type as the first fastening member or of the same type as the second fastening member, or the additional fastening members may be a mixture of both.
Thickness of the circumferential wall is understood as the length of the cross sectional dimension of the wall.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the first fastening members are buttonholes and the second fastening members are buttons; optionally wherein the buttonholes are throughgoing holes and optionally wherein the buttonholes are elongated openings that are parallel with the line between the first and second fastening member.
By using non-protruding fastening means such as buttonholes as first fastening members which is placed near the center, it is ensured that the blanket is comfortable to use when sitting in the central part of the blanket.
The second fastening members are protruding fastening means and are
DK 2018 00140 A1 placed further near the edge of the blanket. Babies are preferably placed in the center of the blanket so that if they sit and tilt to a side, they will land softly on the blanket. Other types of fastening means such as Velcro, pushbuttons, strings, hooks, locks such as T-locks or click locks may also be used.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the blanket further comprises two straps located on opposite sides of a center axis, the ends of each strap being attached to the blanket at different positions near the edge of the blanket.
The straps provide the effect that the blanket can be converted into a bag and can therefore be used to carry toys, necessities or the like. The baby blanket provided with straps can therefore be used for transportation and upon arrival be used as a piece of baby equipment in the form of a blanket or a nest.
In a preferred embodiment the straps extend along a section of the periphery of the blanket. The section may correspond up to substantially 1/2 of the total periphery of the blanket such that each of the straps corresponds to up to around 1/4 of the periphery of the blanket and that each strap is separated by a section of the periphery corresponding to substantially 1/4 of the total periphery of the blanket. Depending on the size of the blanket and length of the straps is may be beneficial to vary the length of each strap. The strap may therefore have a length varying around 1/4-1/8 of the total periphery of the blanket.
The blanket may be converted into a bag by folding two opposite sides without a strap towards the center of the blanket and thereafter folding the remaining two sides towards the center to provide a bag. When the straps are pulled, the folds are maintained and secure items within the bag. By placing the straps near the periphery of the blanket the straps are folded into the circumferential walls when the blanket is folded into a nest. The baby will therefore not come into contact with the straps when placed in the nest. The straps would otherwise pose a safety risk to the baby.
DK 2018 00140 A1
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that each of the straps, between it respective ends, are slideably connected to the blanket by means of two loops.
The loops provide the effect that when the straps are tightened, the blanket will near its periphery be compressed and lock the folded sides of the bag into place. Depending on how much the straps are tightened the lengths of the straps can be varied.
The loops may be provided by a loop of fabric or it may be a ring of a solid material, such as plastic or metal.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the blanket comprises an internal passage along the periphery of the blanket in which a string is accommodated, wherein at least an end of the string is accessible through an opening of the internal passage, so that, when the string is pulled, the edge of the blanket is collapsed to form a pouch. Preferably the blanket comprises two strings, each string is accommodated in internal passages in opposites halves of the periphery of the blanket. The two strings may be fastened near the same point on the periphery and accessible through one or two openings in the internal passage.
The pouch has a larger volume compared to the bag and it is also faster to convert the blanket into the pouch. The user of the blanket may therefore quickly place e.g. toys on the center of the blanket and tighten the string in order to form a pouch around the toys.
The straps may then be used to carry the pouch in a convenient manner.
It may additionally or alternatively be said that the blanket is characterized in that the second fastening members, and optionally the straps and the loops are located on the first side of the blanket.
This provides a first side of the blanket without any protrusions which is intended as the upper side of the blanket and nest, and a second side of the blanket which comprises substantially all protruding elements which is intended as the downwards side. By having an upper side without any protruding elements provides a blanket and/or nest which is safe for babies,
DK 2018 00140 A1 since they cannot entangle into straps, buttons etc. and a functional downwards side comprising the protruding elements which provides the functionality of the blanket.

Detailed Description
In the following, embodiments of the invention will be described in further detail. Each specific variation of the features can be applied to other
DK 2018 00140 A1 embodiments ofthe invention unless specifically stated otherwise. Note that for illustrative purposes the dimensions, especially thicknesses, ofthe different elements shown may be exaggerated.
Turning first to Figs. 1 and 2, a first side 20 and a second side 30, respectively, of a multi-purpose baby blanket 10 of the invention is shown. The first side 20 is intended to function as the lower side ofthe blanket 10,
i.e. the side intended to face the floor in use, while the second side 30 is adapted to face upwards to present a contact surface for a baby to be placed on. When folded out on a floor, the blanket 10 is designed to accommodate an infant or a baby, in a manner that allows it to move around on the blanket 10. To make the blanket 10 comfortable for the baby, each of the first and second sides 20, 30 are provided by a layer of fabric which are stitched or welded together along their peripheral edge to enclose a soft core, e.g. provided by cotton wool or a soft foam. This further allows the blanket 10 to be used as a quilt, if the baby is put to rest on a bed or sofa.
The blanket 10 comprises multiple sets of mutually corresponding fastening means 1,2 adapted to enable the edge of the blanket 10 to be rolled or folded up to form a circumferential wall 40 around a central area of the second side 30, whereby the blanket 10 forms a baby nest with a nest area 50 adapted to accommodate a baby in a manner that limits its movement. Each set of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2 comprises a first fastening member 1 and a second fastening member 2, which, in the shown embodiment, are formed by a button hole extending through the blanket 10 and a button, respectively.
The first fastening member 1 and a second fastening member 2 of each set of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2 are arranged on a line which is substantially perpendicular with a center axis 11, 12 of the blanket 10, i.e. an axis crossing the center of the blanket 10, whereby each set of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2 allow a part ofthe peripheral edge of the blanket 10 to be rolled or folded up to form a part of the circumferential wall 40.
Figs. 3 and 4 show the blanket 10 of Figs. 1 and 2 in the baby nest
DK 2018 00140 A1 configuration where the peripheral edge of the blanket 10 is rolled up towards the center of the second side 30 to form a circumferential wall 40 intended to limit the movement of the baby to keep them in the central nest area 50. The shape ofthe blanket 10 of the invention may in principle be any shape when folded out. However, the presently preferred embodiment shown in Fig. 1 to 6 has an oval shape, preferably elliptical, more preferably circular, which provides a greater surface to circumference ratio, whereby the blanket 10 achieves a greater play area in the folded out configuration, while having a peripheral edge which is easier to roll up to bring it into the baby nest configuration.
In the shown embodiment, the blanket 10 comprises six sets of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2. The first four of the sets are arranged symmetrically around a first center axis 11 and the second two sets are arranged symmetrically around a second center axis 12 perpendicular on the first center axis 11. The mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2 thus allow the blanket 10 to be brought from the folded out configuration to the baby nest configuration by first rolling the points ofthe peripheral edge, between which the second center axis 12 extend, towards the center and engaging the first four sets of mutually corresponding fastening means 1,2, whereby two side walls a formed of the rolled up portions of the blanket 10, and secondly by rolling the points ofthe peripheral edge, between which the first center axis 11 extend , towards the center and engaging the second two sets of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2, whereby the circumferential side wall 40 is completed and the nest area 50 enclosed.
Besides being attached along the outer periphery, the first and second sides 20, 30 of the blanket 10 are further connected by a circumferential stitching 6 which extends along the peripheral edge, thereby defining a circumferential inner passage 7 between the stitching 6 and the peripheral edge. The inner passage 7 houses one or two string(s) which extends through the internal passage 7 and extends out through one or two hole(s) 4 in the first side 20, the second side 30, or the peripheral edge to be accessible to the user. The string thus allows the blanket 10 to brought into a
DK 2018 00140 A1 pouch configuration by pulling the string to contract the peripheral edge to form a pouch. The blanket 10 thereby allows the user, e.g. a parent or nanny, to easily enclose toys or other baby supplies in the blanket 10 by gathering them on the second side 30 of the blanket 10 and pulling the string(s) to enclose them in the pouch formed by the blanket 10.
The blanket 10 further comprises two straps 6 adapted to function a shoulder straps to facilitate carrying the blanket 10. The straps 6 are arranged symmetrically about the second center axis 12 and attached close the peripheral edge at both ends 3, thereby allowing the blanket 10 to be folded into a bag configuration by first folding, i.e. not rolling, the points on the peripheral edge between which the second center axis 12 extend inwards towards the first side 20 and engaging the second sets of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2, and secondly by folding the blanket along the first center axis to form a bag, where the straps 6 can function as shoulder straps.
Figs. 5 and 6 show the blanket 10 of Figs. 1 to 4 in the bag configuration. In order to improve the straps 6 capabilities to function as shoulder straps in the bag configuration, each ofthe straps 6 have been lead through two loops 5 arranged between the ends 3 of the respective straps 6 to allow the straps to better close the opening of the bag formed by the blanket 10. As shown in Fig. 6, the blanket 10 may in the bag configuration be closed tighter by also pulling the string in the internal passage 7. In the bag configuration, the blanket 10 thus presents a more convenient and comfortable way of carrying baby accessories than in the pouch configuration. Additionally, the straps 6 allow the parents to use the blanket 10 as a swing when playing with the baby, by holding the straps 6 and placing the baby on the first side 20 of the blanket 10.
In the embodiment shown in the previous Figs., all protruding features,
i.e. the second fastening members 2, the straps 6, and the loops 5, have been arranged on the first side 20 of the blanket 10. This ensures that they are not accessible to the baby, when the blanket 10 is in the folded out configuration and the baby is placed on the second side 30, thus preventing the
DK 2018 00140 A1 baby from tearing anything of the blanket 10 or become entangled in the straps 6. Furthermore, by arranging the protruding features on the first side 20, the blanket may be used as a nursing pillow by rolling it towards the first side 20 to form a cylinder with a soft surface as all the protruding features are rolled into the blanket 10.
Figs. 7 and 8 show schematic drawings of first and second side 20, 30, respectively. In the shown drawings, the first fastening members 1, i.e. the buttons, have been omitted. As mentioned above, the first and second fastening members 1, 2 could be provided by other types of fastening means than buttons and through holes, e.g. hook and loop, click buttons, or magnets. However, buttons and through holes provide the most secure engagement, while also presenting the most cost sensible option. Furthermore, by using buttons and through holes, it becomes possible to also fold the blanket 10 into a sleeping bag configuration by folding the blanket 10 towards the first side 20 and engaging a first fastening member 1 of one set of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2 with a second fastening member 2 of another set of mutually corresponding fastening means 1,2.
Figs. 9 and 10 show schematic drawings of first and second side 20, 30, respectively, of a presently preferred embodiment with the dimensions ofthe blanket given in cm. as can be seen in Fig. 10, the nest area 50 in the baby nest configuration will be approximately 30x65 cm corresponding to the size of an average baby in the age 3-6 months.
It should be noted, that each set of mutually corresponding fastening means 1,2 can comprise further second fastening members 2 arranged in line with the first and second fastening members 1, 2, whereby the dimensions of the nest area 50 may be customized by engaging the first fastening member 1 in the desired one of the second fastening member 2 or one of the further second fastening members.
The first fastening members 1, i.e. the button holes in the shown embodiment, of the first four sets of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, are arranged 30 cm from their corresponding second fastening members
2, i.e. the buttons, while the first fastening members 1 of the second two sets
DK 2018 00140 A1 of mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2 are arranged 26 cm from their corresponding second fastening members 2.
While the placement of the mutually corresponding fastening means 1, 2, vary from embodiment to embodiment depending on the thickness of the 5 blanket 10, they should be arranged such, that the circumferential side wall 40 formed by the rolled up portions of the blanket 10 in the baby nest configuration has the required height to restrict the movement of the baby. Meanwhile, the second fastening means 2 should not be placed too far from the peripheral edge or the walls 40 may become difficult to roll. At the same 10 time, the distance between the first and second fastening members 1,2 of the respective sets should not be placed too far from each other or the rolled up portions may become too loose when rolled.
