Description
Denominations
Centering ball coupling for mounting on a drawbar mounted on a trailer.
Scope of production
This arrangement relates to a centering ball coupling for mounting on a drawbar mounted on a trailer. The centering ball coupler makes it easy to pull a trailer to the towbar of a car, where the trailer coupling device will automatically be caught by the upright sides of the centering ball coupling, and then be guided and centered directly over the ball on the towbar of the car. A further advantage of the chosen design is that the individual parts can be laser cut by a flat metal plate, after which they are bent into shape and assembled. This will reduce manufacturing and inventory costs.
Prior art
From the literature, several examples are known of the fact that a trailer pulls a trailer to the car's ball coupling. Thus, US Patent 2,170,983 is known in which the drawbar is bifurcated, consisting of an outer tube fixed to the trailer, and a retractable inner tube mounted on the trailer coupling device, and the wire from the drawbar extending internally into the tubes and attached to the extendable tube. . The disadvantage of this generation is that the trailer coupling device must be connected in advance to the coupling ball of the vehicle, that the car and trailer must not stand further apart than the retractable system can reach, and that the vehicle and trailer must already be aligned. Before driving, outer and inner tubes are locked together. Another example is US Patent 5,975,552 wherein the tow bar is also two-piece, but consisting of an outer tube mounted to the trailer, however, mounted in a pivot / tilt module, and a retractable inner tube mounted on the trailer coupling device, and wherein The wire from the accordion runs inside the tubes and is attached to the retractable inner tube. The disadvantage is, as mentioned before, that the trailer coupling device must be connected in advance to the coupling ball of the vehicle and that the car and trailer must not stand further apart than the retractable system can reach. However, the vehicle and trailer need not be aligned. Before driving, outer and inner tubes are locked together and the swivel / tilt module secured.

The technical problem to be solved
A towbar on the car is for many an indispensable thing. This does not refer to a towbar for the garden waste trailer, but rather to a towbar for a professional / semi-professional 4-wheeled trailer, such as a caravan, a horse transport trailer, a boat trailer, a craft trailer or the like. It is far from always possible that the trailer can be parked so that it can easily be backed up, and if it is very heavy, it can be a challenge, or impossible, for a single person to both move and steer the trailer. For many, it is also a challenge to reverse so accurately that the towbar and coupling device end up being aligned and immediately interconnected. Thus, it is desired to provide a ball coupling which is not a coupling device, but is used only to pull the trailer to the vehicle, so that the trailer coupling device is placed precisely over the towball of the vehicle: where the distance between the trailer and the vehicle is limited only by the length of the tow cable the angle between the vehicle and the trailer can approach +/- 90 °, in relation to the position of the tow ball.
The new technique
What is new in the production is that the ball coupling is not a coupling device, but is an accessory that is mounted at the end of the wire on a drawbar mounted on the trailer. This can increase both the distance and the angle between the vehicle and the trailer. Thus, since the production does not have to meet the applicable requirements for a connection device, the parts for the production can be cut out of a flat plate, after which the relevant main parts are bent into shape. The centering ball coupling consists of a left and a right half, which is assembled by means of a hinge, so that the two halves can be clamped together on the tow ball mounted on the vehicle. The cutout is designed in such a way that, when the two pre-bent and assembled halves are closed around the tow ball, they encircle the tow ball in the vertical plane and the tow neck at the horizontal. Flange for locking handle, locking handle, pull spring for locking handle and shackle for wire are mounted. The lock handle is equipped with a pin that engages a hole in the right half. This prevents the ball coupling from opening when pulling. The locking handle is further provided with a stop arm which ensures that the ball coupling only opens so much that it can be removed from the tow ball. After assembly, the production, viewed from above, appears approximately triangular and with upright sides. These upright sides will catch the trailer coupling device and will, using the upright stop edges, center it directly over the towball of the vehicle. After this, the centering ball coupling can be removed and the trailer coupling device pressed to the vehicle's tow ball. If the trailer
DK 2018 00078 A1 coupling device is not level with the ball coupling, the two bent flaps will move the trailer coupling device up and in between the upright sides.
The technical impact
By using the above method, the claimed benefits are obtained. The invention and particularly advantageous embodiment are explained below with reference to the following drawings.
List of Figures
Figure 1 shows the production in overall condition Figure 2 shows the individual parts of the production Figure 3 shows the assembly of the left half Figure 4 shows an example of a cutting drawing for the individual parts
Embodiments
A towbar for a vehicle is available with different ball sizes. Thus, a preferred embodiment is laid out for 50 mm ball size and is made of 3 mm stainless steel, but can be made of different sheet thickness or other suitable material. It is also easy to scale it to another ball size. Figures 1 + 2 + 3 show the embodiment of the invention. As can be seen in Figure 2, the centering ball coupling consists of a left (1) and a right (2) half. The cutout (21) is designed in such a way that, when the two pre-bent and assembled halves are closed around the tow ball, they encircle the tow ball in the vertical plane and the neck of the tow hook in the horizontal plane
The two halves are assembled using the hinge (7) and the screw and nut (8). Fit welding lug (3) for locking handle (4) in the left half of the narrow upper part of the cutout (10). Through the elongated holes (14), the locking handle is passed through the two halves and secured to the welding shaft using the screw and nut (5). To make the lock handle self-locking, install the spring (6) in the hole (16) in the lock handle and in the holes (17). Fit the drawbar shank (9) in the cutouts (11). A pin (12) on the lock handle engages a hole (15) in the right half and prevents the ball coupling from opening when tension is applied. The locking handle is also provided with a stop arm (13) which ensures that the ball coupling opens only so much that it can be removed from the tow ball. After assembly, the top view is approximately triangular and with upright sides (18). These upright sides will catch the trailer coupling device and, by means of the also upright stop edges (20), center it directly over the towball of the vehicle. Then it can
GB 2018 00078 A1 disassemble centering ball coupling and push the trailer coupling device to the vehicle's tow ball. If the trailer coupling device is not level with the ball coupling, the two bent flaps (19) will move the trailer coupling device up and in between the upright sides.
