专利摘要:
A protective pad, which is wearable over a knee-covering or elbow-covering portion of a protective garment for a firefighter or for an emergency worker, comprises an outer, puncture-resistant layer, an intermediate, insulative layer, and an inner layer. Each of the outer and inner layers has a length and a width. The outer and inner layers are attached to one another along two outer seams extending lengthwise and along two outer seams extending widthwise so that the apparent length of the inner layer, as measured along an imaginary line bisecting the inner layer, is shorter than the apparent length of the outer layer, as measured similarly, and so that the apparent width of the inner layer, as measured along an imaginary line bisecting the inner layer, is shorter than the apparent width of the outer layer, as measured similarly. Preferably, the outer layer comprises a series of pieces, each of which pieces is folded along a fold extending widthwise and is tucked under itself so as to define a loop, and which pieces are attached one after another along a series of seams extending widthwise.

TITLE OF THE INVENTION PROTECTIVE KNEE, ELBOW, OR SHOULDER PADTECHNICAL FIELD OF THE INVENTION This invention pertains to a protective pad, such as a knee pad, elbow pad, or shoulder pad, for a protective garment for a firefighter or for an emergency worker. BACKGROUND OP THE INVENTION Protective pads for protective garments for firefighters or for emergency workers are exemplified in United States Patents No. 5,729,832, No.5,896,583, and No. 6,317,889 B1. United States Patent No. 5,896,583 discloses protective pads being worn over the knee-covering and elbow-covering portions of protective garments for a firefighters. Undesirably, and particularly if the protective pad has plural layers sewn to one another and to the underlying portion of the protective garment, the protective pad tends to be somewhat stiff, to resist bending, and to remain flat, rather than to conform to the shape assumed by the knee-covering or elbow-covering pori:ion when the protective garment is being worn. SUMMARY OP THE INVENTION This invention pertains to a protective pad, which is wearable over a knee-covering, elbow-covering, or shoulder-covering portion of a protective garment for a firefighter or for an emergency worker. The protective pad comprises an outer layer and an inner layer. The protective pad may comprise an intermediate, insulative layer, between the outer and inner layers. According to a first aspect of this invention, the outer and inner layers are attached to one another, as by stitching, along two outer seams extending lengthwise and along two outer seams extending widthwise so that the apparent length of the inner (aver, as measured between the outer seams extending widthwise, along an imaginary line approximately half-way between the outer seams extending lengthwise, is shorter than the apparent length of the outer layer, as measured between the outer seams extending widthwise, along an imaginary line approximately half-way between the outer seams extending lengthwise. According to a second aspect of this invention, the outer and inner layers are attached to one another, as by stitching, along two outer seams extending lengthwise and along two outer seams extending widthwise so that the apparent width of the inner layer, as measured between the outer seams extending lengthwise, along an imaginary line approximately half-way between the outer seams extending widthwise, is shorter than the apparent width of the outer layer, as measured between the outer seams extending lengthwise, along an imaginary line approximately half-way between the outer seams extending widthwise. Preferably, the protective pad combines the first and second aspects of this invention. Preferably, the outer layer comprises a series of pieces, each of which pieces is folded along a fold extending widthwise and is tucked under itself so as to define a loop, and which pieces are attached one after another, as by stitching, along a series of seams extending widthwise. Advantageously, when the protective pad is attached around its periphery, as by stitching, to an underlying portion of a protective garment, whether a knee-covering portion, elbow-covering, or shoulder-covering portion, the protective pad tends to remain in a curved shape, which facilitates bending of the protective pad and of the underlying portion of the protective garment. Moreover, the protective pad tends to conform to the shape assumed by the knee-covering, elbow-covering, or shoulder-covering portion when the protective garment is being worn. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS Figure 1 is a perspective view of a firefighter wearing protective garments including a protective coat and a pair of protective pants, to knee-covering portions of which protective pads embodying this invention are attached, as by stitching. Figure 2 is an enlarged, perspective view of an exemplary one of the protective pads, as attached to a fragmentarily shown, knee-covering portion of the pair of protective pants. Figure 3 is a fragmentarily shown, cross-section of the exemplary one of the protective pads, as attached to the knee-covering portion of the pair of protective pants. Figure 3 is taken along an imaginary plane 3 - 3 of Figure 2, approximately half-way between two outer, lengthwise extending seams of the protective pad, in a direction indicated by arrows. The imaginary plane bisects the protective pad. Figure 4 is a fragmentarily shown, cross-section of the exemplary one of the protective pads, as attached to the knee-covering portion of the pair of protective pants. Figure 4 is taken along an imaginary plane 4 - 4of Figure 2, approximately half-way between two outer, widthwise extending seams of the protective pad, in a direction indicated by arrows. The imaginary plane bisects the protective pad. Figure 5, on an enlarged scale, is a fragmentary, perspective view of a similar pad attached, as by stitching, to an elbow-covering portion of the protective coat. Figure 6, on a similar scale, is a fragmentary, perspective view of a similar pad attached, as by stitching, to a shoulder-covering portion of the protective coat. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE ILLUSTRATED EMBODIMENTS As illustrated in Figure 1, a firefighter is wearing protective garments including a protective coat 10 having two arm-covering parts 12, each having an elbow-covering portion 14, and including a pair of protective pants 20 having two leg-covering parts 22, each having a knee-covering partion 24. The protective coat 10 also has two shoulder-covering portions 16. A protective pad 30, which constitutes a preferred embodiment of this invention and which is described hereinafter, is attached around its periphery, by stitching, to each leg-covering part 22, so as to cover a front region of the knee-covering portion of said leg-covering part 22. The protective pad 30 has a puncture-resistant, water-repellant, outer layer 32, which is made from a suitable fabric, such as Kevlarr'" fabric, NomexT"' fabric, or a similar or dissimilar fabric, that has been treated so as to be water-repellant, and which is made, in a manner known heretofore, from a series of separate pieces. Except for a bottom piece 34, each piece 36 is folded along a fold 38 extending widthwise and is tucked under itself so as to define a loop 40.The pieces 34, 36, are attached one after another, by stitching, along a series of seams 42 extending widthwise. The protective pad 30 has an inner layer 52, which is made from a suitable fabric, such as KevIarT'" fabric, NomexT'" fabric, or a similar or dissimilar fabric, and a thermally insulative, intermediate layer 54, which is made from a suitable material, such as a felt batt of reconstituted fibers. The intermediate layer 54, which is disposed between the outer layer and the inner layer 52, is attached, by stitching, to the outer layer 32, along the series of seams 42 extending widthwise. According to the first aspect of this invention, the outer layer 32 and the inner layer 52 are attached to one another along two outer seams 62 extending lengthwise and along two outer seams 64 extending widthwise so that the apparent length of the inner layer 52, as measured between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 3 - 3 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise, is shorter than the apparent length of the outer layer 32, as measured between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 3 -3 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise. According to the second aspect of this invention, the outer layer 32 and the inner layer 52 are attached to one another along the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise and along the outer seams 64 extending widthwise and so that the apparent width (W°) of the inner layer 52, as measured between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 4 - 4 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, is shorter than the apparent width (W) of the outer layer 32, as measured between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 3 - 3 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 62 extending widthwise. Herein, the apparent length of each said layer 32, 52, between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 3 - 3 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise, is the actual distance measurable between the outer seams 64 extending lengthwise, along the imaginary line (in plane 3 - 3 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise, if said same layer 32, 52, is drawn tautly while the other layer 32, 52, is detached. Herein, the apparent width of each said layer 32, 52, as measured between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 4 - 4 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, is the actual distance measurable between the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise, along an imaginary line (in plane 4 - 4 of Figure 2) approximately half-way between the outer seams 64 extending widthwise, if said same layer 32, 52, is drawn tautly while the other layer 32, 52, is detached. As illustrated, the protective pad 30 is attached around its periphery, by stitching along the outer seams 62, 64, to the knee-e:overing portion 24. Being interposed between the outer layer 32 and the inner layer 52, the intermediate layer 54 is disposed within the outer seams 62 extending lengthwise and within the outer seams 64 extending widthwise. Advantageously, the protective pad 30 combines the first and second aspects of this invention. Thus, the protective pad 30 tends to remain in a curved shape, which facilitates bending of the protective pad 30 and of the knee-covering portion 24 of the pair of protective pants 20. Also, the protective pad 30 tends to conform to the shape assumed by the knee-covering portion 24 when the pair of protective pants 20 is being worn. As illustrated in Figure 5, a protective pad 30', which is similar to the protective pad 30, is attached around its periphery, by stitching, to each arm-covering part 12 of the protective coat 10, so as to cover a back region of the elbow-covering portion 14 of said arm-covering part 12. As illustrated in Figure 6, a protective pad 30'°, which is similar to the protective pad 30, is attached around its periphery, as by stitching, to each shoulder-covering portion i6 of the protective coat 10. Advantageously, as attached around its periphery, by stitching, to the elbow-covering portion 14, the protective pad 30' tends to remain in a curved shape, which facilitates bending of the protective pad 30' and of the elbow-covering portion i4 of the protective coat 10. Moreaver, the protective pad 30 tends to conform to the shape assumed by the elbow-covering portion 14 when the protective coat 10 is being worn.
