TECHNICAL FIELD
[001] The present invention relates in general to egg handling devices and methods. More particularly, the present invention relates to an egg removal apparatus for removing and collecting poultry eggs from egg holders and an associated method. BACKGROUND
[002] Discrimination between aviary eggs based on some observable quality is a well-known and long-used practice in the poultry industry. "Light verification" is a common name for such a technique, a term that has its roots in the original practice of inspecting an egg using the light of a candle. Eggs that are to be incubated are typically checked with light during embryonic development to identify live and non-live eggs. It is common practice to separate non-live eggs from live eggs to increase the available incubator space, reduce the risk of contamination, and save vaccine costs related to in ovo inoculations.
[003] Conventionally, eggs designated as non-living can be removed either manually or by means of an automatic egg removal device as described, for example, in US Patent 6,145,668 to DePauw et al., And US Patent No. 6,149,375 for Hebrank. Automatic egg removal devices may employ suction-type lifting devices as described in U.S. Patent No. 4,681,063 to Hebrank, U.S. Patent No. 5,017,003 to Keromnes et al., And U.S. Patent No. 7,083,208 to Ilich. The poultry industry is constantly looking for improved ways to remove eggs from carriers that are efficient, that reduce costs, and that reduce the risk of contaminating live eggs.
[004] Consequently, it would be desirable to provide an egg removal apparatus capable of efficiently removing eggs from egg holders in such a way that allows the removed eggs to be collected in an automatic manner. Furthermore, it would be desirable to provide an associated method that would remove and collect eggs from egg holders in an automatic and efficient manner. BRIEF SUMMARY
[005] The above and other needs are met by aspects of the present invention which, according to one aspect, provide an apparatus for removing eggs from an egg holder. The apparatus includes a frame and an egg-lifting system attached to the frame. The egg-lifting system has a series of egg-lifting devices configured to lift eggs from an egg holder. A platform assembly is attached to the frame. The platform assembly has a platform configured to be movably arranged between the series of egg-lifting devices and the egg holder so that the platform is capable of being positioned to receive eggs released from the egg-lifting devices while obstructing concurrently access the egg-lifting devices to the egg holder.
[006] Another aspect provides a method of removing eggs from an egg holder. The method comprises arranging a plurality of eggs contained within an egg holder close to an egg-lifting system having a series of egg-lifting devices configured to lift eggs from the egg-holder. The method further comprises lowering at least one of the egg-lifting devices to engage the respective egg to remove it from the egg holder. The method further comprises lifting the at least one lifting device and the respective egg. The method further comprises moving a platform between the egg holder and the series of egg-lifting devices. The method further comprises depositing any eggs removed from the egg holder on the platform in the release of the egg-lifting devices. The method further comprises moving the platform between the egg holder and the series of egg-lifting devices so that the egg-lifting devices are able to descend to interact with the eggs contained in a subsequent egg holder.
[007] Thus, several aspects of the present description provide advantages, as detailed elsewhere here. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[008] Having thus described several modalities of the present description in general terms, reference will be made to the attached drawings, which are not necessarily drawn to scale and in which: Figure 1 is a perspective view of an apparatus for removing eggs from a support eggs, in accordance with an aspect of the present invention; Figures 2-4 are schematic side views illustrating the operation of an apparatus for removing eggs from an egg holder, in accordance with an aspect of the present invention; Figures 5-7 are a schematic perspective view of a platform assembly of an apparatus for removing eggs from an egg holder, in accordance with one aspect of the present invention; Figures 8 and 9 are schematic top views of a platform assembly of an apparatus for removing eggs from an egg holder, in accordance with an aspect of the present invention; Figure 10 is a schematic side view of a platform assembly of an apparatus for removing eggs from an egg holder, in accordance with an aspect of the present invention; and Figures 11-15 are a partial perspective view of another apparatus for removing eggs from an egg holder, in accordance with various aspects of the present invention. DETAILED DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[009] Various aspects of the present invention will now be described more fully with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which some, but not all aspects of the invention are shown. In fact, this invention can be incorporated in many different forms and should not be construed as limited to the aspects presented here; instead, these aspects are provided so that this invention will satisfy applicable legal requirements. Like numbers refer to like elements
[010] According to some aspects, the present invention is directed to devices and methods for removing and collecting eggs from an egg holder (a so-called "plane"). The aspects described here provide automatic solutions to improve efficiencies, safety, and sanitary conditions related to removing eggs from egg holders. For example, aspects of the present invention may allow removal of eggs from egg holders where all the lifting means for lifting eggs from the egg holder need only and move vertically, without any lateral or horizontal movement, in order to carry out the removal and dispose of the eggs. Such aspects can reduce the total impression of the device while maintaining an adequate level of performance. In addition, aspects of the present invention can also provide improved means for collecting, preserving and transporting eggs removed from the egg holder to be used for various purposes.
[011] The apparatus for removing eggs according to the aspects of the present invention can be used to raise and transfer various types and sizes of eggs and in conjunction with the various egg processing techniques (for example, in ovo inoculation, virus in ovo, etc.). The egg removal apparatus according to aspects of the present invention can be used with any types of poultry eggs including, but not limited to, chicken eggs, turkey eggs, duck eggs, goose eggs, quail eggs, pheasant eggs, exotic bird eggs, etc.
[012] Referring now to Figure 1, an apparatus 10 for removing eggs from an egg holder 16 (Figures 2 and 4) is illustrated, in accordance with some aspects of the present invention. The illustrated apparatus 10 includes a frame 12, an egg-lifting system 15 attached to the frame 12 that can be configured to lift respective eggs 11 from the holder 16, positioned below it, and a platform assembly 18 also attached to the frame 12. The platform assembly 18 may include a platform 200 capable of being movably positioned below a series of egg-lifting devices 14 (not shown in Figure 1 for clarity purposes) of the egg-lifting system 15 for receiving eggs 11 released from them. Each egg-lifting device 14 may include a flexible cup 33 configured to engage and retain an egg 11 in relation to it seated therewith. A vacuum can be applied to the flexible cup 33 to remove the egg from the egg holder 16. In some cases, the egg lifting devices 14 can be selectively installed so that the interaction of the flexible cups 33 with the respective eggs can be controlled selectively. A conveyor assembly 50 can be attached to the frame 12 to automatically drive the egg holders 16 near or below the egg-lifting system 15.
[013] Referring now to Figures 2-4, the operation of the apparatus 10 is illustrated according to a particular aspect. As shown in Figure 2, the egg-lifting devices 14 have a plurality of eggs removed 11 from the egg holder 16 supported by the carrier assembly 50. In this respect, the egg-lifting devices 14 have descended along a vertical line 60 so that the flexible cups 33 engage the eggs 11. The egg-lifting devices 14 can then be lifted along the vertical line 60 and a vacuum applied to the respective flexible cups 33, so that the eggs 11 designated for removal are lifted of the egg holder 16. In some cases, the egg-lifting devices 14 can be controlled individually using, for example, individual pneumatic cylinders. In other cases, the egg-raising devices 14 can be controlled normally using, for example, a collector.
[014] The platform 200 of the platform assembly 18 can be removed or extended in a direction 70 perpendicular to the vertical line 60 to an extended position so that the platform 200 can be positioned below the egg-lifting devices 14 to receive the eggs 11 still in the release of the egg-lifting devices 14, as shown in Figure 3. In this way, platform 200 can be moved or extended to an extended position so that platform 200 restricts, obstructs, or otherwise blocks the access of the egg-lifting devices 14 to the eggs 11 in an egg holder 16. After the eggs 11 are removed, the egg holder 16 can be advanced along the conveyor assembly 50 so that a subsequent egg holder 16 can be positioned below the egg-lifting devices 14 to undergo the egg removal process, as shown in Figure 4. Platform 200 can be moved or retracted to a po retracted position so that platform 200 is not restricting, obstructing, or blocking the access of egg-lifting devices 14 to eggs 11 in the egg holder 16. Eggs 11 previously deposited on platform 200 can be transported and directed by platform 200 to a designated area, as shown in Figure 4.
[015] As shown in Figures 5-9, according to one aspect of the present invention, the platform assembly 18 can include a platform structure 210 capable of being secured to the structure 12. The platform assembly 18 can include a drive 250 for moving (for example, extending / retracting or rolling / unrolling) platform 200. in some cases, drive assembly 250 may include an actuator 252 configured to drive one or more rods 254 coupled to respective gears or sprockets 256 engaged with an endless belt 258 (for example, a chain). While the illustrated drive assembly 250 shows a sprocket / chain configuration, it will be understood that the present invention is not limited to such a configuration and may instead include other driving means or mechanisms such as, for example, a pulley / belt. Platform 200 can be coupled, secured or otherwise attached to chain 258 so that the movement of chain 250 causes the platform to move as well. In some cases, the drive assembly 250 may be arranged in a way that allows the platform 200 to follow a serpentine path such that the platform 200 can be rolled up in the stowed position (Figures 5, 6 and 9). The winding of platform 200 may allow the egg support 16 and the egg-lifting devices 14 to move without interference or waiting, which can increase the speed of the cycle and save space for movement. Figures 7 and 8 illustrate the platform 200 in an extended position to receive deposited eggs from the egg-lifting devices 14.
[016] Platform assembly 18 may include one or more receptacles or chutes 80 for receiving eggs 11 from platform 200 and directing eggs 11 to a designated location. In some cases, the chute 80 can define a hole 85 in which the eggs 11 transported to the chute 80 are directed by gravity and the inclined shape of a lower part of the chute 80. The eggs 11 that pass through the hole 85 can be collected , for example, by a box 90 (Figure 1). In other cases, eggs 11 can be collected intact for use in other industries or for other purposes. Alternatively, one or more chutes or similar means can be provided to direct the eggs 11 to a box, receptacle or other processing medium.
[017] According to some aspects of the present invention, the platform 200 may comprise a plurality of spaced elements, such as, for example, stems 202. Stems 202 may be appropriately spaced to prevent eggs from falling between them, while it also performs the light checking of the eggs to prevent the rolling movement of them during the movement of the platform 200. In some cases, the rods 202 may be coated with or otherwise formed and a material improving friction to limit the movement of the eggs 11 a once platform 200 has been received. In some respects, the rods 202 may be formed of a malleable material so that the rods are resilient. In this regard, rods 202 may be capable of flexing to reduce the impact of eggs in contact with platform 200 on the release of egg-lifting devices 14, thereby reducing or limiting cracked eggs. Rods 202 can also provide the advantage of being easily removed, replaced and cleaned.
[018] While the aspects of platform 200 illustrated in figures 1 and 5-9 show the spaced rod configuration, it will be understood that platform 200 can have any appropriate composition or configuration capable of providing a platform medium in which eggs can be deposited. For example, rods 202 may be in a contact relationship, rather than spaced. In other cases, the platform 200 may be a single unitary piece of work such as a sheet or belt that could be rolled up. In some cases, the platform 200 may include individual cups or cradle to receive a respective egg aligned with the cup / cradle.
[019] Apparatus 10 can be configured to efficiently process eggs through it using an appropriate timing or timing scheme to conduct eggs through apparatus 10, operating the egg-lifting system 15, and operating the assembly of eggs. platform 18. In this regard, platform assembly 18 may include one or more sensors 75 (Figures 2-4 and 10) to determine or monitor the position of platform 200. A processor may be provided to control the operation of the lifting system eggs 15 and the conveyor assembly 50. The processor can be configured to receive a signal from the sensor 75 so that the operation of the drive assembly 250 can be coordinated with the egg-lifting system 15. In this way the operational efficiencies can be obtained such as, for example, the egg-lifting devices 14 can begin to descend before the platform 200 has fully retracted in the retracted position, or a sup egg yolk 16 can be moved into the egg removal position while eggs 11 from the previous egg holder 16 are being processed by egg-lifting devices 14 and / or platform 200. The processor can also be configured to receive a signal classification of a classifier (not shown) configured to identify and classify eggs 11 as live or non-living. As such, the egg-lifting system 15 may be able to install or actuate the individual egg-lifting devices 14, as directed by the classifier.
[020] Referring to Figure 10, according to some aspects, several platforms 200 can be implemented to provide efficiencies and desired performance. In this regard, in some cases, platforms 200 may be provided at each end of platform assembly 18 such that platforms 200 alternate receiving eggs released from egg-raising devices 14. According to other aspects, the unique platform configuration can be implemented in a manner in which platform 200 moves from side to side of platform assembly 18. In this respect, platform 200 can be retracted on one side of platform assembly 18 by cushioning the eggs 11 released from the lifting devices of eggs 14 on the other side of the platform assembly 18 on channel 80.
[021] Referring now to Figures 11-15, an alternative apparatus 10 for removing eggs 11 from an egg holder is illustrated, in accordance with some aspects of the present invention. The illustrated apparatus 10 includes the frame 12, the series of egg-lifting device 14 attached to the frame 12 which can be configured to lift respective eggs 11 from the holder 16 positioned below it, and the platform assembly 18 also attached to the frame 12 The platform assembly 18 may include an endless belt 20 positioned below the series of egg-lifting devices 14. The endless belt 20 may include a first part 22 having an opening 23 (Figures 11-13) through which a or more egg-raising devices 14 can be extended to lift respective eggs 11 from the support 16. The endless belt 20 can also include a second part 24 in whose eggs 11 lifted from the egg support 16 by egg-raising devices 14 can deposited or otherwise placed (figure 14).
[022] The endless belt 20 can be rotatable between a first position (Figures 11-13) where the first part of the belt 22 is positioned below the series of egg-lifting devices 14 so that the egg-lifting devices 14 have access to eggs 11 in the egg holder 16 through the belt opening 23, and a second position (Figure 14) in which the second part of the belt 24 is positioned below the egg-lifting devices 14 so that the devices egg-raising machine 14 can deposit eggs 11 lifted from egg holder 16 therein.
[023] According to some aspects, one or more sensors can be used to detect the position of each egg-lifting device 14. For example, a sensor can be used to detect whether an egg-lifting device 14 is extended to down through the belt opening 23 and, if so, rotation of the belt 20 can be prevented. Various types of sensors can be used, including, but not limited to, light beam detectors, cameras, magnetic sensors, etc. In some cases, a single sensor may be able to detect the position of each egg-lifting device 14 in the series. In other cases, a separate sensor for each row of egg-raising devices 14 in the series can be used.
[024] Once the eggs lifted from the egg holder 16 are placed on the second part of the belt 24, the belt 20 can be rotated to a third position where the hollows on the belt 20 are moved to the receptacle 28 (Figure 15) or other processing equipment. As shown in Figure 14, the second part of the belt 24 can include a wall 26 that extends through the belt 20. the wall 26 can facilitate the removal of eggs from the belt 20 when the belt 20 is rotated to the third position. However, aspects of the present invention are not limited to the structure and / or orientation of the illustrated belt 20 and wall 26.
[025] Many modifications and other aspects of the present invention described here will come to the mind of someone skilled in the technique to which this invention belongs, having the benefit of the teachings presented in the preceding descriptions and associated drawings. Therefore, it should be understood that the present invention should not be limited to the specific aspects described and that modifications and other aspects are intended to be included within the scope of the appended claims. Although specific terms are used here, they are used in a generic and descriptive sense only and not for purposes of limitation.
