FIELD OF INVENTION
[001] The present invention relates to agricultural planters and, more particularly, to a scraper for removing mud build-up from a press wheel of planter row units. PRINCIPLE OF THE INVENTION
[002] A basic planter has a tractor-towed arrangement of row units, so that each forms a row of agricultural crop. The planting process for each row unit includes opening a furrow, depositing seed in that furrow, and closing the furrow. There is often an additional rear plus assembly on each row unit to press or compact the soil around the seed, for example with a press wheel, to ensure good contact and moisture retention. When a planter is in a soft/muddy field, the press wheel tends to accumulate mud, causing problems with trench closure and seed placement. Planting time is wasted if the operator needs to interrupt a planting operation to clean the wheels.
[003] The present invention provides a simple, yet versatile, adjustable soil press wheel scraper to remove soil that is wet enough to adhere to the press wheel. A scraper clamp attaching a scraper that is only adjustable along a geometric axis (further and closer to the press wheel) has been suggested. Such an arrangement only determines the proximity to the wheel spline in which the scraper removes the mud. Clamps that can be variably positioned around the press wheel periphery have also been suggested. Locating the scraper high, near the top of the press wheel, results in a more widely distributed dispersion of the removed mud than a location closer to the ground.
[004] What is needed in the art is a press wheel scraper that can be ideally located and oriented for specific soil conditions. DESCRIPTION OF THE INVENTION
[005] The present invention provides a press wheel scraper that is adjustable both swivelly and in terms of pitch.
[006] The invention, in one form, is directed to an agricultural planter row unit with a furrow closing structure situated to the rear of the furrow opening and seed deposition arrangements for moving soil into a furrow to cover the deposited seeds. A soil compaction assembly is situated facing the rear of the furrow closing structure and includes a press wheel support arm that extends towards the rear of the row unit with a press wheel that has an axle attached to the arm. of support. An elongated scraper arm is pivotally secured near one end of the support arm for rotation about the press wheel axis of rotation, and a scraper paddle clamp is pivotally secured near the other end of the press wheel. scraper for rotation about a geometric axis displaced from and generally parallel to the press wheel rotation axis. A scraper blade is attached to the scraper blade clamp to remove mud from the press wheel periphery. One gripping mechanism secures the scraper arm in a preferred angular orientation relative to the press wheel and another gripping mechanism secures the scraper paddle clamp in a preferred angular orientation relative to the scraper arm.
[007] The invention in another form is directed to an adjustment arrangement for determining the location and angular orientation of a scraper relative to the outer periphery of a press wheel. The scraper arm is pivotally supported near one end on the press wheel axis and a fastener fixes the angular position of the scraper arm around the press wheel axis at a selected position. The scraper blade is pivotally attached to the scraper arm near the other end of the scraper arm for limited rotation relative to the scraper arm and a second fastener fixes the angular orientation of the scraper blade relative to the scraper arm.
[008] The invention in a further form is directed to an adjustable support assembly for a press wheel scraper of the agricultural planter row unit. There is a press wheel support arm that extends towards the rear of the row unit with a press wheel that has an axle attached to the support arm. The axis determines the geometric axis of rotation of the press wheel. An elongated scraper arm with a scraper blade attached thereto is pivotally secured near one end of the scraper arm for rotation about the press wheel rotation axis and a pivotally secured scraper blade clamp near the other end of the scraper arm for rotation about an axis displaced from and generally parallel to the axis of rotation of the press wheel. A first gripping mechanism secures the scraper arm in a preferred angular orientation relative to the press wheel, and a second gripping mechanism secures the scraper paddle clamp in a preferred angular orientation relative to the scraper arm.
[009] An advantage of the present invention is that the pitch or slope of the scraper blade can be radially aligned (with the blade extending perpendicularly to a tangent line of wheel periphery) or with the press wheel scraper blade a little slanted in any direction.
[010] Another advantage is that it allows the planter to enter the field earlier and stay longer. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE DRAWINGS
[011] The aforementioned effects and other features and advantages of this invention, and the manner in which they are obtained, will become more evident and the invention will be better understood with reference to the following description of an embodiment of the invention, taken in conjunction with the the accompanying drawings, in which: Figure 1 is an isometric view of a press wheel and groove closure assembly which forms the rearward facing portion of a planter row unit in accordance with the present invention; and Figure 2 is an isometric view of the scraper blade and clamp of Figure 1 showing the surfaces not visible in Figure 1.
[012] Corresponding reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the various views. The exemplification defined herein illustrates an embodiment of the invention in one form, and such exemplification should in no way be construed as limiting the scope of the invention. DESCRIPTION OF ACHIEVEMENTS OF THE INVENTION
[013] Referring now to the drawings, and more particularly to Figure 1, there is shown a rearward facing portion of a planter row unit 10 which generally includes a furrow opening arrangement, a planter deposition mechanism. seed (not shown), and a furrow closing arrangement shown here as a pair of disks 12 and 14. The forward direction of motion of row unit 10 is indicated by arrow 16. Connected at one end 17 in a portion of the unit of row 10 and extending over and to the rear of the groove closing discs 12 and 14, there is a press wheel support arm 18, and near the rearward end 19 thereof, a press wheel 20 having a axis 22 extending through holes (not visible) along a geometric axis of rotation 24.
[014] An elongated scraper arm 26 that includes a pair of scraper arms 28 and 30 encompasses the press wheel 20. The scraper arm (26) is pivotally attached to the wheel axle 22 for rotation about the axle. shaft 24, for example, by screw head 32. This rotation allows the scraper blade to be moved around the periphery of the press wheel while remaining at a constant distance from it. A gripping mechanism for securing scraper arm 26 in a preferred angular orientation relative to press wheel 20 may take the form of three holes 34 and 36 equidistant from the hole receiving an axis and the corresponding geometric axis 24. A gripping member, such as a bolt and nut assembly 38, passes through and obscures the third hole. Arm 28 is provided with a similar series of equidistant holes. Therefore, the scraper arm can be angularly adjusted by turning it clockwise or counterclockwise from the illustrated position simply by removing the nut and bolt assemblies from the center holes and reinserting them into one of the holes such as 34 or 36.
[015] In Figure 2, the screw head 32 no longer obscures the shaft 22 that receives holes 40 and 42. The angular orientation that firms the arrangement of holes 44 and 46 equidistant from the shaft that receives a hole 40 and the corresponding geometry axis 24 for arm member 28 is now visible, as is the corresponding bolt and nut assembly 48. Each of the arms 28 and 30 includes an elongated body 49 that extends between an attachment end 51 and an opposite end 53 that is curved to provide the opposite end 53 at an angle to the elongated body 49. The attachment end 51 , the elongated body 49 and the opposite end 53 are formed together in a straight, flat alignment.
[016] A scraper blade clamp 50 has the scraper blade 52 secured thereto by a pair of nut and bolt assemblies 54 and 56. The scraper blade clamp 50 is a generally U-shaped member that has a pair of arms 58 and 60 extending from an intermediate region 62. Each arm has a hole for receiving a mounting bolt 64 or 66, which are axially aligned with the paddle pitch rotation axis 68, and an arc-shaped opening 70 or 72. Locking screws 74 and 76 pass through the arc-shaped openings and limit rotary motion of the paddle clamp to the angular extent of the arc openings. A firm tightening of the mounting screws will tend to lock the pitch of the blade 52, however, tightening the locking screws is much safer. The press wheel 20 has a width 80 which forms a substantially convex surface 82 across the width 80. The scraper blade 52 forms a concave cooperating surface 84 to position itself proximate the convex surface 82 of the press wheel 20 to remove mud from the press wheel 20. press wheels 20.
[017] Two slightly different techniques for fixing the angular relationship between two limbs have been revealed. In one, an off-axis hole in one member is aligned with any one selected from several holes in the other, and a pin or bolt is passed through the aligned openings. In the other, an off-axis hole in one member is aligned with an arcuate opening in the other and a screw passed through the aligned openings to tighten the members together. One technique provides a discrete number of possible angular relationships while the other allows for a continuous range of possible angular relationships across the entire angular extent of the arch aperture. Both techniques can be used in place of the other, and both can be used to determine the blade's proximity to the press wheel surface.
[018] While this invention has been described in relation to at least one embodiment, the present invention may be further modified within the spirit and scope of this disclosure. This application, therefore, is intended to cover any variations, uses or adaptations of the invention by using its general principles. Additionally, this application is intended to cover such deviations from the present disclosure as encompassed in known or customary practice in the art to which this invention belongs and which fall within the scope of the appended claims.
