A combination of a bracket and an RFID tag for mounting said RFID tag on surgical or medical equipment
The invention relates to a combination of a bracket and an RFID tag for mounting said RFID tag on surgical or medical equipment, in particular on an instrument basket or instrument tray or container, the bracket being provided with a central opening for receiving the RFID tag and with an edge that defines said central opening. WO2014 / 096554 discloses such a combination, wherein the bracket is embodied as an adapter which provides space for the RFID tag and in which the RFID tag can be detachably accommodated by means of form locking.
The use of an RFID tag on surgical or medical equipment in general has the advantage that the tagged equipment is easily identifiable and traceable, without the requirement of any special competence of the personnel. A requirement for such an RFID tag is that the tag must be able to withstand repeated washing and autoclave treatment required for surgical equipment and instruments. When RFID tags are applied to instrument baskets or trays or holders, an important advantage is that it is easy to monitor which instruments should form part of the instrument set to be placed in the instrument basket or instrument tray or holder. As a result, inventory and maintenance management can be improved when RFID tags are applied to such instrument baskets, trays or containers. However, it is a challenge according to the state of the art to reliably place an RFID tag on such an instrument basket, tray or container.
Another problem is that the reading of the RFID tags is likely to be hampered by the material of the wire baskets, trays and holders that are usually made of metal.
It is an object of the invention to provide or at least to combat a solution to said problems.
The invention proposes a combination of a bracket and an RFID tag, and a separate bracket, as well as an instrument wire basket, instrument tray or holder provided with the combination of such a bracket and RFID tag, each provided with the features according to one or more of the appended claims.
In a first aspect according to the invention, reliably mounting the RFID tag requires that the edge be provided with legs cooperating with passage holes in the RFID tag, and which legs are adapted to be attached to said surgical or medical equipment. When applied to an instrument wire basket or instrument tray or holder, there are usually holes through which the legs of the bracket can be passed to complete mounting on the basket, tray or holder. If not, suitable drill holes can be made therein by drilling.
Assembly is made simple by ensuring that the legs are manually bendable. However, it is also possible to refrain from bending the legs after they have been guided through the holes of the instrument wire basket, tray or holder and to provide that the legs themselves have holes in which blind rivets are used for secure securing. from the legs to the wire basket, tray or holder.
Stable mounting of the RFID tag can be achieved by providing that the edge is provided with two legs arranged on opposite sides of the edge.
In a preferred embodiment of the invention, at least the edge of the bracket is arranged to act as an antenna for the RFID tag. This promotes the reading of the RFID tag mounted on the usual metal instrument wire basket, tray or holder, which contributes to its effective use. For this purpose, the edge is preferably made of an electrically conductive metal.
Another preferred feature is that the legs are arranged to maintain a predetermined distance from the edge with respect to the surgical or medical equipment. In this way, a reduction in the antenna function of the edge is effectively combated.
The invention is also embodied in a separate bracket implemented by cooperating with an RFID tag, and in surgical or medical equipment or in a surgical or medical instrument provided with the combination of a bracket and an RFID tag according to the invention .
The invention will be explained below with reference to the drawing of a combination of a bracket and an RFID tag according to the invention as applied to a medical instrument tray that is not limited with regard to the appended claims.
In the drawing: figure 1 shows a medical instrument tray provided with a combination of a bracket and an RFID tag according to the invention; Figure 2 shows the bracket separately as shown in the combination according to Figure 1; figure 3 shows the RFID tag separately as shown in the combination according to figure 1; and figure 4 shows another embodiment of a bracket according to the invention.
Whenever the same reference numerals are used in the figures, these figures relate to the same parts.
Referring first to Figure 1, an instrument tray 1 is shown on which a combination of a bracket 2 and an RFID tag 3 according to the invention is mounted.
The bracket 2, which is shown separately in Figure 2, is provided with a central opening 4 for receiving the RFID tag 3 and with an edge 5 which limits said central opening. The shape of the edge 5 and correspondingly the shape of the central opening 4 is designed to enable the inclusion of the RFID tag 3 therein. Figure 3 shows separately a possible RFID tag 3, the shape of which corresponds to the shape of the bracket 2 shown in Figure 2. Other shapes of the bracket 2 are also possible, such as, for example, the shape shown in Figure 4. Of course, the RFID tag correspondingly formed.
Figure 2 and Figure 4 clearly show that the edge 5 of the bracket 2 is provided with legs 6 which, in the mounted state, cooperate with lead-through openings 7 in the RFID tag 3, and which legs 6 are adapted to be attached to the instrument tray 1. In figure 2 and figure 4 the legs 6 are still in the same plane as the edge 5, but it will be clear to the person skilled in the art that the legs 6 are finally rotated through approximately 90 ° in order to allow their cooperation with the passage openings 7 of the RFID tag 3 and their passage through corresponding holes of the instrument tray 1. For this purpose but also for the purpose of completing the mounting of the bracket 2 and the RFID tag 3 on the instrument tray 1, it is preferred that the legs 6 be manually be bendable to allow for easy assembly without the use of auxiliary mounting equipment. However, other solutions are also possible, such as a fastening of the legs 6 to the instrument tray 1, in which the legs are provided with holes in which blind rivets can be received.
As Figures 1, 2 and 4 show, the edge 5 is provided with two legs 6 which are positioned on opposite sides 5 ', 5 "of the edge 5.
A preferred feature is furthermore that at least the edge 5 of the bracket 2 is arranged as an antenna for the RFID tag 3. In this connection it is preferred that the edge 5 is made of an electrically conductive metal.
Finally, it is preferred that the legs 6 are arranged or that separate means such as spacer rings are used for maintaining a predetermined distance from the edge 5 with respect to the instrument tray 1.
Although the invention has been discussed above with reference to an exemplary embodiment of the combination of a bracket and an RFID tag according to the invention and its use by mounting on an instrument tray, the invention is not limited to this particular embodiment on which many paths can be varied without leaving the invention. The exemplary embodiment discussed should therefore not be used to explain the appended claims strictly in accordance therewith. Rather, the embodiment is intended to illustrate the terms of the appended claims without intent to limit those claims. The scope of protection according to the invention should therefore only be determined in accordance with the appended claims, wherein a possible ambiguity in the wording of the claims can be remedied using this exemplary embodiment.
