Toilet seat
FIELD OF THE INVENTION
The present invention relates to a toilet seat to help a person with movement difficulties go to the toilet. The present invention can be used as an addition.
BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION
People with movement difficulties depend on a care provider for their hygiene. Especially when going to the toilet, the help of a caregiver is needed to help the person get out of bed, take them to the toilet and put them on the toilet. In most cases, this complicated process requires two rescuers to lift the person out of his / her bed, place the person in a transportation aid such as, for example, a wheelchair, take the person to the toilet, and lift the person out of the wheelchair and to place him / her on the toilet. These multiple transfers of a person require a lot of effort from the caregiver, are difficult for the patient and are often experienced as humiliating for and by the patients. On the other hand, these multiple transfers are a heavy burden for the caregiver.
Toilet seats to be placed on conventional toilets are known. US 2005 018 522 and US 3 654 643 describe such a toilet seat which makes sitting and standing of a patient of the toilet more comfortable by causing the toilet seat to make a tilting movement.
However, these known toilet seats have the disadvantage that they do not allow transfer of a patient from his / her bed to the toilet seat and back to bed without intensive assistance from the caregiver. Due to the difference in height between wheelchairs and toilet seats, it is still necessary to carry and support the patient, which is still perceived by the patient as humiliating.
An example of an attempt to solve the above problem is WO 2012 059 806, which describes a chair for disabled persons comprising a seat unit and means for raising the seat unit by means of upwardly extending or vertically synchronized elevator columns on opposite sides of the seating unit.
A disadvantage of this chair, however, is that there is a risk that the patient injures his arms or legs or gets stuck with his / her clothing while the seat is adjusted vertically.
Therefore, it is an object of the present invention to provide a toilet seat that overcomes the above problem. Summary of the invention
As a first embodiment of the present invention, a toilet seat is provided comprising: a support, a seat mounted on the support, a lifting means that allows vertical adjustment of the seat relative to the support from a first position to a second position, the surface of the seat, when positioned in the first position, is substantially parallel to the surface of the seat when positioned in the second position, and that said lifting means are adapted to exert an upwardly directed force on the seat of at least 500 N for lifting the seat from the first position to the second position which is higher than the first position, and wherein the seat comprises an armrest that separates the seat surface of the seat from the lifting means.
Because the armrests separate the seat surface of the seat from the lifting means, there is no risk that the patient injures his / her arms or legs or gets stuck with clothing while the seat is adjusted vertically.
The armrests provide stability for the patient by providing additional support through fixed points.
Another advantage of the armrests is that they provide lateral obstruction for the patient and thus eliminate the risk that the patient loses his / her balance and falls off said toilet seat.
In an embodiment of the present invention, said armrests may have an adjustable height relative to the seat to meet the height requirements of each patient.
By exerting an upwardly directed force of at least 500 N, the toilet seat according to the present invention is indeed capable of vertically adjusting its seat relative to the support from a first position to a second position while the patient is sitting on said seat which makes the overall experience much less humiliating for the patient and much easier for the caregiver. In addition, the toilet seat lifting means provides optimum stability for the patient by allowing movement on only one axis and in one direction at a time.
As a result, the position or orientation of the patient's body is not changed by vertical adjustment of the seat, without the risk of the patient falling off the toilet seat.
In a preferred embodiment, said lifting means can be driven manually or electrically. In the case of a manually driven lifting means, the operating mode can be mechanical, pneumatic and / or hydraulic, and in the case of an electrically driven lifting means, the operating mode can be mechanical, pneumatic and / or hydraulic or a combination thereof.
In one embodiment of the present invention, the toilet seat lifting means is not located under the seat. As a result, the seat according to the present invention can be positioned directly above the conventional toilet bowl and the seat is then lowered onto the toilet bowl, thereby maintaining space between the seat and the conventional toilet bowl.
In an embodiment according to the present invention, the support of the toilet seat comprises at least two profiles between which the seat is attached.
The lifting means can cooperate with one of the profiles, preferably the lifting means can cooperate with both profiles.
In an embodiment according to the present invention, the armrests are mounted on said profiles.
Additionally, for a smoother and more effective transfer of the patient to and from the bed, said support may include transport means, more specifically wheels. The patient should only be lifted out of bed, placed on the toilet seat according to the present invention, brought to the toilet, the seat should be placed above the conventional toilet bowl and can then be lowered onto the toilet bowl.
In a further embodiment according to the present invention, the seat can comprise tilting means for easier placement on and off said seat.
In another embodiment of the present invention, the seat may comprise a flexible foil that extends downwardly with respect to the seat for a more hygienic experience.
In a further embodiment of the present invention, the seat further comprises a hose adapted to be connected to a water source for cleaning said film after each toilet use.
In addition, the present invention is also directed to a kit of parts, comprising: a support, a seat that can be mounted on the support, a lifting means capable of vertical adjustment of the seat relative to the support from a first position to a second position, whereby the surface of the seat when positioned in the first position is substantially parallel to the surface of the seat when positioned in the second position. The kit with parts for a toilet seat according to the present invention can further comprise a toilet bowl and / or a number of replaceable flexible foils.
