Centrifuge
The present invention relates to a centrifuge which can be used for the manufacture of glass, in particular suitable for the manufacture of glass fibers, as well as to a method of manufacturing glass fibers.
The glass fibers are known, among others, for their insulation qualities. For this particular application, the fibers are generally bonded with a synthetic resin and the finished product will have the form of rigid panels or soft mattresses to protect walls and ceilings, or the shape of shells to insulate the pipes.
Generally, in the manufacture of glass fibers, the molten glass is fed into a hollow body which rotates at high speed (centrifuge). This body has a peripheral wall perforated with numerous orifices through which the glass is projected under the action of centrifugal force. Thus, so-called primary fibers are formed which are then stretched, for example by the action of flames or a gaseous stream.
According to one of its aspects, the present invention relates to a centrifuge according to claim 1, the dependent claims having preferred embodiments.
The invention relates to a centrifuge for the manufacture of glass fibers, comprising an orifice adapted for attaching the centrifuge to a centrifuge support shaft, characterized in that said orifice has a square section with broken corners.
By "square with broken corners" is meant an octagon having 4 identical sides of a first size and 4 other identical sides of a second size, smaller than the first, a long side always alternating with a small side. The short sides form the "broken corners".
This particular form has the advantage of being able to present several of the following interesting properties: the relationship is close between the centrifuge and its support shaft; the assembly between the centrifuge and its support shaft is simple; the orifice may be formed during the molding of the centrifuge itself; - Fixing the centrifuge to its support shaft may require fewer parts.
Advantageously, the smallest square in which the square with broken corners may have sides at least 5 cm long, preferably at least 6 cm and / or at most 10 cm long, preferably at most 9 cm.
According to another aspect, the subject of the present invention is a method for manufacturing glass fibers according to claim 3.
A particular embodiment of the invention will now be described as an example, with reference to FIG. 1, which is a perspective view of a centrifuge according to the invention.
A centrifuge (1) for the manufacture of glass fibers, made of a metal alloy and having a diameter of 15 inches, comprises a circular bottom (2) and a side wall (3) perforated with numerous orifices (not shown) . It comprises an orifice (4) having a square section with broken corners, adapted for attaching the centrifuge to a centrifuge support shaft (not shown). The orifice (4) has a dimension d equal to the side of the smallest square in which the orifice can register, of 8 cm.
In operation, a flow of molten glass is introduced into the centrifuge (1), the axis of which is oriented vertically, which, when the centrifuge rotates (at about 1700 RPM), is directed towards the inner surface of the side wall (3) the centrifuge, in which are formed a plurality of orifices so that the glass is projected in the form of "primary fibers" at the outlet of said orifices. In addition, means may be provided for producing a draw gas stream directed downwardly along the outer surface of the perforated side wall of the centrifuge so that the primary fibers are stretched and driven downwardly in the draw stream for depositing, generally coated with a binder, on the upper face of a receiving conveyor.
The fiber mat can then be, for example, packaged to form insulation blankets.
