The bottom of the cooling jacket is wave-shaped and communicates with a lower coolant collector in the region of the engine transverse plane between two cylinders via U-shaped branch passages and vertical channel sections. Furthermore, from CN 2 751 151 Y a cooling jacket for a crankcase is known, the cooling jacket bottom - as viewed in a side view - is wave-shaped. The cooling jacket has a smaller distance from the cylinder head sealing plane in the region of a first engine transverse plane containing the cylinder axis than in the region of a second engine transverse plane between two cylinders. This is to improve the cooling of thermally highly stressed areas. In particular in the area of the edge cylinders, relatively large cylinder deformations can occur. Bl 2 The object of the invention is to avoid this disadvantage and to reduce the deformation of the edge cylinder. According to the invention this is achieved in that the distance of the bottom of the cooling jacket from the ceiling in at least one end region of the cooling jacket - preferably in the region of an engine longitudinal plane spanned by cylinder axes - is less than in the region of the second engine transverse plane between two adjacent cylinders. Particularly good results can be achieved if the distance between the floor and the ceiling in at least one frontal area to about 90%, preferably between about 50% and 70% of the distance between the floor and the ceiling. Due to the constriction in the direction of the cylinder axis in the frontal region of the cooling jacket on the one hand, the cooling in this area can be reduced and thus achieves a uniform temperature profile of the cylinder block, and on the other hand, the structure of the cylinder block significantly stiffened and thus deformations are significantly reduced.
